need help figuring out a gear ratio for my samurai.
« on: October 05, 2011, 05:52:32 PM »
Im having a problem figuring out the high range overall and low range overall gear reduction on my samurai.

it has 4.57 ring and pinion gears that said they have an overall reduction of 24%

the transfer case has 4.16:1 gears with a 84% low reduction and a 16% high range.

i just got this samurai a week ago and i dont know if you add the R&P reduction with the T-case reduction or what.

my other samurai has the 6.4:1 T-case gears with a low range of 181% and a high range of 17%. the high range between the two is way off but my new samurai doesnt crawl for crap in low range

If anybdy can help me out with this i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

I believe you would add the reductions together.  So 24%+84%=108%.  Where as your other samurai has a low reduction of 181%.  So yeah, I bet you can tell a difference in low range between the two.

yeah thats what i thought too. this samurai screams goin down the road at 55 im afraid to push it any higher in the rpm then 4500. what would be the logical way to fix it?

Well, you either have to run bigger tires, or change the high range reduction.  To change the high range reduction, you are going to have to run higher axle gears (numerically lower), or go to stock tcase gears.  Both of which will make your low range reduction even worse.

well heck that sucks both ways.
i asked the guy why he geared it like he did and he told me that trail tough talked him into it.

If you go on www.trailtough.com and go to the tech section youll see how the got him to gear it.

 Thanks agin

Here is a great gearing calulator : http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html
plug in your info and play with the numbers to get it where you want it to be.

What size tires are you running ??
What year transmission ?

Here is also another calulator for gearing info : http://www.lepayne.com/gears.html

The numbers don't add up but it is late and maybe I am just not reading correctly.....
If the previous owner followed the Trail Tough article, the R&P gearing of 4.57 would be for running 32" tires.
With 32" tires, 4.57 R&P, & 4.16 t-case (with a late transmission) you would be turning around 3628rpm at 55 mph with crawl ratio of 69:1.
Now if the previous owner wanted to run a 32" tire and geared the ring & pinion for such BUT left the stock 26" tires on it, then they did NOT follow the tech article and that is why you are turning 4500rpm at 55mph.
From the Trail Tough article : ....reduce the ratio at the ring and pinions relative to the size tire you want to run, then select the transfer case gears that will best meet your 4-wheeling needs.

it has 33" tires and the late model trans.

i have to run it up to 4500rpm on the freeway to get up to speed with California traffic other then that its fine in high range.

low range on the other hand is hole different story. with 33s and the crawl ratio of 69.1 its not geared for crawlin in the rocks at all.
my other samurai has a crawl ratio of 87.1 of which i like a lot and cruses down the road between 3000 and 3500 at 60mph.

You could swap in an earlier tranny.  That would drop the RPMs about 300 at 60 MPH.

I juggled the problem or gearing for both rocks & freeway myself and spent alot of time playing with the gearing calculators. I ended up with a crawl ratio of 100:1 and spinning 4000rpm at 65mph. This is where I settled for the best of both, for right now...
I just stick to the slow lane on the SoCal freeways.

Like Skyhiranger posted - early transmission would drop rpm abit.
I would fiugre out what I wanted to do with it (freeway / rocks / both). Go into the gearing calculator and play with the different R&P combos and the t-case options until I got the numbers aligned where I wanted them. Then start building.

my996duc1 were did you get your 4.30 R&P gears at? your crawl ratio and high range sound perfect to me.

would the R&P gears out of a 1994 16v tracker work with my carriers?

I have 6.4:1 T case gears in my other samurai.

4.30 gears are found in 2 door trackicks with an auto tranny and the 1.6 16V engine.
Front trackick gears from 89 to at least 99 will work on samurai carriers.
