a used 94 tracker
« on: September 27, 2011, 10:49:20 PM »
well found this tracker on craigslist.been wanting one for offroad use only and thats what this one has been used for.only has 111000 miles on it and it runs good so,we got it.i have two boys, one 14 and one 17 and they look forward to playing in the mud with this thing. so here is a few pics.

got it home and on jacks right off the batt.

we decided to cut down the doors and weld them shut.we just cut the inner panels and rolled the outer over the door bar.

we decided to take out the carpet and see just how bad the floor was.the previous owner told me the back floors were gone.he had added some pieces of shelving and had the back seat strapped down with a ratchet strap(i dint like that).we wanted to add a roll bar of some sorts and make it a little safer.with two boys and myself im pretty sure this thing will end up on it side or its top. haha  so we started pulling carpet and this is what we found.

so we started adding pipe and flooring.

i did not cover the gas tank, for easy entry to the fuel pump if we ever needed.its just tacked in place and folded over the rear tail gate.
so this is were she is at now.

got  two more braces to add on the sides and adding a pipe behind the front seats for a grab handle for the back passengers.patched the front floor also. they were not that bad but the body mount of pass side needed some tlc.the boys are having a great time just working on it cant wait to let them get out and run it.

i do have one question......  is there a easy way to get the oil pan off???  it has a pin hole in it. its right above the front diff..   im thinking about loosening the pass side motor mounts and pull the motor up a little and see if i can get to it that way.i know i could do a better job if i just took the pan off but i dont know if i can get it off without dropping the front diff or lifting the motor up. any suggestions or help would be great.    oh yea its the 8v valve with auto tranny

Not sure about the 8 valve, but on my 16v I lifted the motor up in order to remove the oil pan.

I would look at using DOM if you can instead of pipe for your cage.  It doesn't shear like pipe will in a roll.  Are you going to put a second cross bar in the rear to help keep the cage from folding over to the right?

But she certainly looks like a wheeling only rig.  :D

yea not done with cage yet..just kinda wanted something for a little more protection.anything is better than nothing.didnt want to put a bunch of $ in this beater so we just went with what we had, this thick walled gas pipe.not planning rock climbing just some mudding.

thats good to hear about with the motor. i was planning on trying that first.glad to hear that will work.

lifting the motor to get oil pan off might work on models were the floor was rotted.  haha    i need about a inch more clearance.im going to have to loosen the diff. hopefully i can gain enough without pulling axles. will get so more pics some time soon. my buddy has one with a busted timing belt,i told him to bring it over and i will fix it for him so we can go wheel  ;)    so hopefully some time soon we can go play.might have to wait till spring  :-\  we will see

There are a few guys here that have removed the pan without dropping the front diff but I found it a lot easier just to drop the diff outa the way. Not that big a deal to drop, you can leave the axles in and just undo the diff mounts being careful to support it so it doesn't fall and bugger up the axles.

Pulling the front diff is not a big thing at all.
  • Lift & support Tracker
  • Disconnect driveline & drivers CV joint
  • Remove vent line
  • Support Diff.
  • Remove diff mounting bolts
  • Lower diff.  (Be carefull not to bugger right side seal as you slide diff off the CV joint.)

That is a good start to a fun addiction.

well i got the pan out and welded up. had to unbolt the diff.took out 5 of the 6 bolts that hold it up.i left one in on pass side.had it loose but still in there. pan was a pain to weld up but i got it.also added a tranny cooler. next im going to check timing belt and see if it has ever been changed.also i got a brake fluid leak in rear pass drum. need to take apart and see whats going on in there.prolly wheel cyl. we will see.

got it done.  haha   between high school soccer and alot of overtime we finally got it done. i went out today trying to find an place to run it(that is why my 2wd tracker is muddy).no luck yet but we will find something im sure. here are some pics.

the boys love it.i do need to get seat belts for the back seat, but i have a line on some racing harness's.so we will see.
thought about getting a spool but i want to see what this thing will do without one first.  any ideas were to run it near vincent ohio??  east/south east ohio/ or west, west virginia

Looks like your rear seat belt towers are still in place.  Try a wrecking yard/pull a part for the seat belts.
That is a mean looking mud pounder.  You and the boys should have lots of fun in it, even with open diffs.  It is probably more fun with open diffs, cause then there is a reason you shouldn't have made it.
Try to enjoy it, cause I know you will be only doing it for the boys.

not that anyone seems to care about a trail rig/ mud buggy , I bought another tracker to play with.

we cut it down to a two seater

then I decided to loose some of the weight on the 4 seater

then added a winch to small one.

had to test it. haha

I need a taller tree so I can set it straight up haha

got another winch for the 4 seater ready to install
.

hope you enjoyed the show. :-). should be a fun summer
