High whizing sound...????
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:45:54 PM »
Hey guys, hopefully your not getting tired of see me ask a new question almost everyday.

This one is actually pretty serious, when i am in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear there is a very loud whining or whizing noise coming from underneath, when i let off the clutch it gets real loud just for a split second and then goes quiet.  I know it's obviously in the drivetrain.  It does NOT make this noise in 1st or 2nd gear and in 5th and 4th it is VERY LOUD.

I have filled both front and rear diffs up, as for the t case and tranny, i haven't been able to check those yet.  I will be buying the 10mm square head for my 3/8 drive ratchet soon and i will then check my tranny to make sure it has enough fluid in it.

I know that it could be a few different things and this is my first time owning one so im not real familiar with it yet.  Im thinking its either low gear oil in Tranny or bearings in tranny or possibly in t case other than that i can't think of anything else.

Worn tailshaft bearings do that, especially with a suspension lift.

It could also be the transmission bearings, it can be fixed tho

Whatever you do, do it soon. The longer you wait the more damage will accrue. Ask me how I know. Really.

Check the tail shaft bearings first. Usually, if it's the tranny bearings, the tranny will whine in every gear before whining in 4th (direct 1:1).

Ok, so check the tailshaft first, is the tailshaft bearing where the rear driveshaft meets the t case???

I highly recommend getting a FSM, sometimes it's nice to have a dead tree version in the shop.  You can also check out Suzukiinfo.com and Ack's Faq, as both have factory FSM scans available.

Check out the thread in Performance/Modify titled " Need help with Calmini gear install." Wild re-titled it " Can O Worms." So true.
Definitely get a manual, not the chiltons, a FACTORY one like the dealers used. You can find 'em on Ebay, sometimes pretty cheap.

Wow, i just got done reading your thread Bentparts, and that's some crazy rebuild you had, i am deffinetly gonna take your advice, im gonna park my Sammi in our garage and put it up on stands and there it will sit until i get the funds to do the rebuild, i will start it up every week. In the meantime, like i mentioned i will be working on front third member.

At Evil cow, yes i will defenitly be invested in a FSM, Hawk Strictly Suzuki sells them.

Will update once i get started.
Check my diff thread every now and then for updates on that project.

If i had to guess, i would say that the noise is a bearing, because it sounds like something is siezed up and is turning dry.

Someone on here mentioned a tailshaft, but i asked where that was located and didn't get a response, i may check the t-case and see if its in there first.

Does the noise change when you are on the gas or off the gas??  I have a whizzing noise when I'm on the gas but when I'm off it's silent.  I'm also wondering what it is.  I really only hear it at higher speeds but I think there all the time.  I have a 94 sammy with 4.57 gears.

The whine that goes away when off the gas is coming from your differential. More than likely your rear one as probably in 2wd while hearing the noise. I ran into this EXACT problem with my rear diff. Grab the drive shaft near the u joint going into the suspected diff flange and SHAKE THE F($K out'a it. It shouldn't move AT ALL. Any movement is bad movement and you'll need to replace the bearing that make up the diff. The noise your hearing is the drive-shaft, bearing, and pinion gear moving around. If you wait until the bitter end like I did, you'll wear away the surface where the bearing presses onto the pinon shaft. The bearing will no longer be a pressed fit and it'll flop around. So you'll either replace the pinon and ring gear for 150 bucks (if their available) or rebuild the diff and hope it lasts another 10k.
