Strange Whining/Humming noise
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:42:24 AM »
I'm going to try to be as detailed as I can here. Any ideas, thoughts, opinions are greatly appreciated.

I recently bought a 2.5L GV Limited. At first I didn't pay much attention but after about the first 2 days of owning it I started noticing a humming or whining sound and cannot figure out where its coming from. It happens ONLY between 62-68MPH and only when I am trying to maintain a speed between that range. If I'm between 62-68 and I mash the gas...the noise goes away immediately but as soon as I get back between that range and have my foot on the gas to maintain that speed, it comes back.

I also have noticed that if I take my foot off the gas completely during that range, the noise also goes away. The steering wheel does not shake and I cannot tell where the noise is coming from. As of now, the car runs fine otherwise but the noise is very annoying. HELP.

Check for a bent t case crossmembet putting the u joints slightly out of phase. If that all looks good, I would start by changing the rear diff fluid. Watch for metal shavings / semi metalic sparkles in the old fluid. Be sure to put synthetic in. Btw, its not lifted is it?
If your not living life to the fullest then your not living at all.

You wont really know if your wrong till your upsidedown

Mike,
Thanks for the input. No, it is not lifted. The previous owner was a an older lady. Being mechanically inept won't help me here. I suppose I can just take it to the shop at my next oil change and have them check, right? Do you think this is something that I need checked right away? It doesn't sound like it's hurting anything but what do I know...

I have had the same issue with mine.  Infact it is doing it again. Last winter mine went from that hum to a much more noticeable whoosh or grinding sound, took it in and needed to replace both rear wheel bearings.  That ran me 800 big ones.  I have noticed the hum again in the last 5k. I say for the price of having it fixed , just ride it out till it worsens then get it fixed.  Do have someone check your diff fluid for you though.

Another thing, get a carfax. Mine had been t-boned in a previous life. Might be a bent axle housing.

Bad tires and or alignment issues could be a culprit too.

I would at least have someone look at it for sure, the sooner you know what you are up against the better you will be able to prepare for the fix costs and etc......
SJ-413   mild modifications

Thanks for the reply to all who replied. I plan to take it to the dealer in about 500 miles (next time I'm due for an oil change). I'd rather be safe than sorry. Hopefully its just a bad alignment or tire issue. That's easy. I'm hoping it isn't any of the other things you mentioned.

Do you guys think I can wait 500 miles until I'm due for an oil change and have it looked at then or could this be something that is of more importance and needs to be looked at immediately??

I think you would be fine. Just be aware of the noises your vehicle makes. If it worsens before, take it in sooner . Safety is always more important.
