Sidekick A/T cooler location?
« on: September 17, 2011, 01:33:34 PM »
Getting ready to change my tranny fluid and was looking into adding a tranny cooler on my 98 4 door Sidekick (1.6, 4speed, AC).  There does not seem to be much room in front of the condenser to place a tranny cooler.  Where have you guys placed them?

Thanks,

Dan

I had one mounted in front of the grill on my Calmini bumper. I've sinced removed it and went back to the stock cooler in the bottom of the radiator since I put in a new radiator. I actually think it cooled it TOO much as it always took awhile to start shifting right after start up. The stock one seems fine unless your going to be towing a lot.

Sounds better than 1980s VW Baja style (on the roof with a cowl). Would still like to get one...

For the tranny service, I took the cheap way out and just pulled the plug on the pan.  Will swap out the filter later.  Looks like I will need to move the front driveshaft out of the way to change the filter next time....

You should be able to order a radiator with a built in cooler.  That is what BRD HNTR did when installing the V6 with the automatic transmission in his Tracker.

If his is an automatic, which I think he stated is a 4 speed, it already has the radiator and built in trans cooler.

I ran the cooler first and then the radiator to warm up the fluid if it
gets too cold in the cooler, besides, if you run it through radiator
first, you put all the heat into the coolant which can over heat the
radiator under heavy use, where if it's run through the external cooler
first, it can actually help drop the radiator coolant temp

What cooler are you guys using ? I just helped a friend install an oil cooler w/ a thermostat so it didn't open untill the oil reached x temperature.  This could be usefull in getting the tranny up to temp and then keeping it cool later on.

Just a full flow Hayden I think was the brand, was like 6x12 or something
in that size. The thermostat sounds like a good idea, unless it sticks closed
