Hi all,

Followed the procedures on kickfix.com for egr clogging.  I was getting a PO400 code. Mine was not clogged too bad, but the code went away after cleaning things up.

The EGR does not get vacuum to it, however. I have vacuum from the manifold up to the vacuum switching valve on the front of the manifold, but vacuum does not pass through. I actuated the valve by running 12V to it seems to work.

It seems that the problem is that the valve is always actuated and does not let vacuum pass through.  My Haynes' manual is of no use beyond here.  Anybody know what should be going on from the VSV wires to wherever?

It should only open up at cold temperatures.  Once your rig warms up the switch should disable itself as the egr is not needed.

One way to test if the EGR is working is when you manually operate it, does the vehicle want to die at idle?

The valve and all the plumbing is fine. If I pull vacuum it dies.

I always thought that they did not work when cold but when it reached operating temp that the EGR was activated....

EGR only works warm and at moderate loads. It won't work if the vehicle is not moving or at full throttle.

So,

If I put my vacuum gauge on the hose to the EGR valve, drop in in drive, block the wheels and romp on the throttle a bit, I should get a vacuum reading...

No you should not get a vacuum reading at the EGR valve when romping on it.
You should only get a vacuum reading at that location if the egr VSV is activated. The kickfix site has the precise EGR flow chart and sequence of operation and it needs to be followed.

EGR only works warm and at moderate loads. It won't work if the vehicle is not moving or at full throttle.

Guess I had it backwards.  I haven't really looked at the FSM on that section since I fixed mine.
