Aftermarket steering wheel
« on: August 24, 2011, 08:57:12 AM »
I'm thinking about replacing the stock steering wheel on my '95 Sidekick with a different wheel, possibly something from Grant.

I know which adaptor kit I'll need. However, not sure which size to get. I figured I'd get something a bit smaller than stock, but not sure how much smaller to go.

Any thoughts on this?

I'd say no more than an inch smaller - unless you have power steering.

I like the leather rimmed Momos - it's hard to imagine just how much difference a good leather rimmed wheel can make until you try it.   However - there is a but - if you go leather, be prepared to take care of it - leather cleaners & preservers will be needed, and you have to keep it out of the sun.

Thanks for the advice. I do have power steering in my Sidekick.

A leather wheel would be nice, but we'll see.

I tried one of the smaller Grant steering wheels and took it off after one ride. Increased steering effort. I wish I could find one of those leather covers that would fit the stock wheel, a bit of padding would be nice. What, Warn doesn't make one?  ;D

The increased steering effort is the main reason I said no more than an inch smaller if you don't have power steering - the other reason is you end up with the turn signal & washer stalks project beyond the wheel rim.

Try to avoid wooden rims, they look nice, but in an accident they splinter easily.
