timing chain
« on: August 23, 2011, 03:47:28 PM »
have a 2000 grand vitara v6 4 door auto .  buzzng sound comming from front of engine.  it sounds like a chain being dragged over a rod.  have taken it to mechanic who tells me (after he took it apart) that the timing chain kit is worth 1800 dollars plus.  at this point he is not sure if this will stop the buzzing, aparently this is a some what common problem with this engine.  Any help, suggestions , or facts would truely be appreciated.

What wild said.  The Grand Vit V6 already has a timing chain, so why would you need a kit to swap to one?  And for 1800 you can probably get a new motor.

It sounds like you may have run into the issue of the chain tensioner going bad.  This is usually caused by too thick of oil being used in the engine, usually 10w40 instead of the 5w30 required, or the tensioner just being out of alignment.

Rock Auto, http://www.rockauto.com/
DNJ ENGINE COMPONENTS Part # TK523
2000 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA 2.5L 2500cc V6 FI DOHC : Engine : Timing Set $380

I think the mechanic saw you coming and got greedy, now you know what it costs
tell him no more that $xxxx and get ready to have your Grand Vit towed to a more
trustworthy shop, and the major ones are usually the ripoff shops, go find a small
shop with a good mechanic, ask around
