Im getting conflicting information on what gear ratio is in the axles of  a 99 tracker with a 2.0 4speed auto
any one here know ?

4.88 I believe.

4 different ratios  ... 4:30  4:62 4:88 5;12  are all listed(on the interweb ) as the gear ratio for 99

I don't think 4.30s were ever an option in 99+.
4.62s and 5.12s were only available with manual trannys, from what I have read (4.62s with the 2.0 and 5.12s with the 1.6).
4.88s were the only option with the auto, from what I've read.

Is the vehicle where you can go look at it?  If so, just jack one rear tire off the ground, spin it exactly 2 turns and count the number of times the driveshaft turns.  The number of driveshaft revolutions in two turns of the rear tire is the gear ratio (4.62 turns or 4.88 turns or 5.12 turns).

Look up 1999/chevy tracker/axle assy rear (w. housing).  It will then ask you to select the ratio, based on the tranny and engine.

thanks for the info.. I have the pig out of the car Im doing a solid axle & 4.3 swap  and want to mark it so it dosent get mixed up with some older pigs I have   but had the shafts/out of the center section I slipped them back in & counted closer to 5 than 4.5 so i guess 488 is correct

If you have the third out, simply count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide that by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.

I just counted the ft ring & pinion teeth & the #s were 39 ring gear & 16 pinion if I do the math as suggested & it comes to 2.4375  or by a online calculator 244to 1 what am i doing wrong ?  I see that the 244 is 1/2 of 488

I wanna see a pic of a 16 tooth pinion.  I have never even heard of one in a trackick.

Im going to take the ring & pinion out tomorrow & Ill post pics or admit I cant count (Im counting them in the 3rd member)  Im putting a samurai axle under this & am going to use this ring & pinion to match the rear  but I just want to know the ratio

Pinion Gear is 8 teeth..

Ring with 39 teeth is 4.875
Ring with 41 teeth is 5.125

The 99+ models only came with 4.875 or 5.125 as far as I know..

Remember the pinion teeth are each very long and it can be miscounted quite easily.. I'm sure you made an error..
