Hey Guys,

Converting from auto to manual. I bought a 2dr 99 Vitara 1.6 SOHC for parts, my rig is a 99 Tracker 2.0L. Just curious, It appears that it should be a direct swap. Anyone have any experience with this swap?

I also noticed that my clutch fork is damaged, the pivit ball inside of the transmission actually wore through the fork! Never seen this before, I'm assuming it was due to a seized throwout bearing?

Any things I should check while the transmission is out? It's high mileage but the fluid was nice and clear.

And from what I've read, the 2.0L/1.6 transmission, clutch and bolt pattern is all the same, correct?

Thanks in advance!
Brandon

I believe the clutch fork damage is fairly common - I just replaced my clutch, fork included - as far as the transmission swap goes, I have no personal experience, but, based on the FSM - there are two 5 speed transmissions, one used on the 2.5 V6 and the other used on the 1.6 & 2.0 I4s, so I believe it will swap.  I can check the parts manual to see if the clutch etc. are the same part in the morning.

One thing to be aware of - the ECU controls the transmission on these - you may get a CEL from an auto tranny ECU if it doesn't see certain inputs (no signal from the input & output shaft speed sensors, but signal from the vehicle speed sensor)

Thanks for the response.

Ya I was kinda anticipating that the ecu wouldn't like the transmission swap too much, hopefully it will drive ok. So far I have the pedals installed, all the provisions were there in the firewall, I had to drill out the holes for the clutch master but everything bolted up just fine, no need to even drop the steering column.

Where did you get your clutch parts? Dealer?

Thanks

Yup - where I am it's the easiest way to get parts of known quality - assuming you're in the US, you probably have other options, however, if you're interested, SouthWest Suzuki will usually have SGP at discounted prices.

Transmission cases & bellhousing are identical between a 99 1.6 & 2.0, so is the input shaft - it should bolt right up without a problem - there are differences in the clutch part numbers so there are probably some differences there - you probably need to get the correct flywheel & clutch assembly for the 2.0
