« on: June 19, 2011, 12:10:12 PM »
hello, im 15 and i recently bought my first samurai. im in love with it. however, im looking to make it front and rear posi track. since im only 15 and have to buy my own parts, i have a tight budget. how should i go about making the front posi track? some have said that posi track in the front would only cause head and heart ache. my samurai is strictly OFFroad.

My choices, in order of preference....

lock right-front....lock-right-rear.
lock right-front....mini spool-rear.

Notice I do not list a mini spool in the front....I would not recommend that at all.
Also, if you put a locker in the front, adding power steering is a nice upgrade.  You can steer it without power steering, but it makes it much, much nicer with PS.

today i dropped it in some real deep mud and from what i could tell while sitting in the drivers seat, i have a limited slip front differential. would you recommend changing it to posi track or do you think i should leave it alone and lock rite the rear? thanks for your advice btw

To my knowledge they do not make a limited slip differential for the samurai differential. I run a mini spool in the rear and it works great. It does get a little annoying on the street but I don't dd it.
when in doubt, throttle out

I doubt you have a limited slip in the front.  A lot of times in mud both front tires will spin, even though the axle has an open diff (no locker of any type).
Lock the rear axle first, try it for awhile and see how you like it.  Then if you think you still want to lock the front, go ahead and do it.

i know that mini spools in some vehicles can result in snapped axles and other problems, but is that a factor to worry about when I'm only dealing with stock 1.3 that is strictly driven offroad and through a few county fair mud bogs?

a bit of  clarification. by "posi track" do you mean lockers?

the term "posi" came from limited slips back in the day. "posi's" (also limited slips) have clutches and require special oil additive.they also can slip with age and abuse.

lockers are mechanical with no clutches, they usually use dog tooth gears for engagement. then there is "selectable" lockers (arb's electrics etc). which act as a spool when locked.

I also would recommend a lock-rite in the rear (or selectable) and a limited slip for the front. (if available)

To my knowledge they do not make a limited slip differential for the samurai differential.

They are out there, but pretty rare.  I have one sitting on the floor of the shop that I bought just in case I need one at some point in the future.  Just cause they are rare.  :D

I run a mini-spool in the back of my SJ-410, I did it because I was building on a budget when I first put my rig together and haven't had a reason to change.  For an off-road only vehicle they work fine and won't snap an axle any easier then a locker.

i decided to put a mini spool in the rear, found one on TRAILGEAR for $75. im positive the front is limited slip now because i was trying to pull a log with my sammy, going real slow, only one front tire would spin. but afterwards, i got temporarily  stuck n a mud hole and when i was real easy on the skinny pedal, only one front tire would spin, but when i started pourin the gas to 'er, both front tires started to sling mud.
