Adjust the throttle cable on a 2.0L I4?
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:43:21 PM »
Noticed the other day that the Tracker's throttle cable is a bit slack up at the top of the engine where it connects to the throttle body.  You can move the lever a bit before it actually pulls on the cable.  This might explain some of the low speed bog it has.

Checked the pedal end in the cab and it's just fine, nice and tight like it should be.

How do I adjust this?  Loosen then tighten the threaded end there?

2 to 7mm slack - adjust on the nut.

Okay...can you put that in English...errr...stupid...errr...explain that better?

Last time I adjusted a throttle cable it was using zip ties and it was a Ford.

If I recall correctly, my 2.0 GV has a bracket that allows the outer casing of the cable to be adjusted to get rid of that slack - if you have an automatic, you may need to readjust the kickdown cable as well.

2 to 7mm slack - adjust on the nut.

The accelerator cable play should be 2 to 7 mm, measured by movement of the pedal.  The adjustment is made on the throttle body end.  Identify the accelerator cable, slacken the locknut and adjust the adjustment nut to achieve the above pedal movement.  Retighten the locknut.  Stow tools.

The pedal honestly doesn't seem to have any play.  I climbed under the dash and watched and moving it seems to move the cable instantly.

Which sounds odd as I type it but sure seems like the slap is at the other end only.

Accelerator cable play should be visible (in terms of cable slack) at the throttle body end of the cable, where it attaches to the throttle arm; you only measure it at the pedal.  You move the pedal to take up the slack at the TB end, and measure how much it moved.

Guess it's tight then.  Not slack at all at the pedal.

Thanks guys.

If you can't take up the slack at the throttle end by moving the pedal, the cable is binding.
