OEM Clutch Cable - Geo vs. Suzuki
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:42:31 AM »
Hi All,

I called around in San Jose, CA area looking for a clutch cable for a 1992 Geo Tracker. The good local parts store (Intex) said $33 for an aftermarket cable made by Centric. The Suzuki dealership said $92 for an OEM cable. The Chevrolet dealership said $45 for an OEM cable. I ordered the OEM cable from Chevrolet, so we'll see how it looks. Figured I'd share this in case others are looking around too.

Anyone have any experience buying a clutch cable or other parts from Chevrolet for a Geo Tracker or Suzuki Sidekick? Any thoughts related to this?

Dealership names:
- Capitol Hyundai Suzuki (911 Capitol Expressway, San Jose, CA - 888-232-5834)
- Capitol Chevrolet (905 Capitol Expressway, San Jose, CA - 408-600-2770)

Thanks,
Curtis

You will get different prices from different dealerships. The last time I ordered parts from the Chevy dealer, they came complete in Suzuki packaging.

Hi All,

Picked-up the part today from the dealership. It doesn't have any Suzuki stickers on it, just GM stickers on the outside of the box. Attached are photos of the two stickers that were on it. The cable itself has no markings on it.

Think this is really an OEM cable of equal quality to the Suzuki cable? Or some aftermarket part rebranded by GM?

Thanks,
Curtis

Be sure to compare the length of the new cable to the old cable, before you install it.  I have had issues with getting the correct cable (although the ones from the dealerships are usually the correct cable).  And also make sure the adjusting thread area of the cable is the same between the new and old cable.
I'd say that cable is a good cable.  The biggest thing (besides the correct length cable) is to make sure the part that bolts to the firewall is metal and not plastic.  A lot of people have issues with the cables that have a plastic part there, instead of metal.
And also be aware that it is possible that a brand new cable can be bad.  Although, in my experience these have been auto parts store cables and not GM/Suzuki bought cables.

Skyhiranger: Appreciate your advice on this. The cable definitely has a metal part for the connection to the firewall. Hopefully that means it's a good quality part.

every aftermarket cable i have bought has had a metal peice at the firewall and my last broke and pulled itself THROUGH the firewall, had to replace with a new one and rebuild the firewall.

ive yet to get an OEM unit for my truck, but when i do need one i always buy the higher end aftermarket cable (napa sells 2 different brand ones here, so far they have held up fairly well, but once you get some noise in them or they start feeling gritty or stiff, replace it. before it gets you stranded.
had to drive back home with no clutch in traffic when the cable ripped through the firewall.
