sj410 crawler
« on: June 02, 2011, 01:17:48 AM »
hi folks,
i ve got a sj410 lwb with a 1l motor and a 4 speed t case, I ve found a good deal on a 1.3 motor and a 5 speed gb i am gonna swap in those with the same old t case, wanted to use the rest of the money on crawler gears.
Problem - I cant find crawlers for the sj410 specifically all i find are for samurai's, will they fit? or where do i look for sj410 crawlers?
ty guys.

Actually, you need a new t-case.  The Crawlers gears don't mount in the SJ-410 t-case, but on the plus side a Samurai T-Case is a bolt in replacement.  Your e-brake will even swap over without a problem.  Hold onto your old t-case though, it has 10% lower high and low range gears then the stock Samurai t-case.  Making it perfect for someone running 235/75R15 tires.

Your axles are also incompatible with anything Samurai and hard to find replacements for.  Your spring pads are 1.5" closer together on each side, so if you swap some Samurai axles on you will need to cut and re-weld all the spring perches.

As for SJ-410 crawlers, that is what I have.  Still run the stock 1.0l motor and 4 speed, thing runs like a champ.  No stalling issues either due to the side-draft carb.  If I was going through the trouble of swapping motors I would go with a 1.6l or 2.0 rather then the 1.3, which only nets you 20hp.  Of course, that is 40% more power...

It depends on the year of your SJ410, models after 1985/86 had the same tcase as the Samurai.

If its  a 83 or older the driveshaft bolt pattern is different, I redrilled the flanges, it works ok, but if you can get a tranny output shaft and driveshafts and diff flanges from a 84 or newer sj410 or samurai, it should all bolt in.
82 SJ410: 5" lift (spoa), home made cross over steering, bestop, custom rust lots of it,33"tsl, 6.5:1's. To install: Toyota diffs being built. To build: roll cage, traction bar, bumpers.

89 sidekick: lift 2"suspension 3"body, 31's, aluminum rims, warn hubs, (4) lights on roof, turbocharger.

I was thinking of the NA market.  They stopped the SJ-410 in 84, I believe, when they brought in the Samurai.  Could be wrong though.
