my two cents on lifts and sas
« on: May 23, 2004, 04:45:44 PM »
I have wheeled my sunrunner for a yer almost, some pretty hardcore stuff.  I have a 4inch body lift, 33x12.5 tires on 10 inch rims and AUTO locking hubs.  yes. everything else is stock

If you're breaking parts, you're driving too rough. Ease off the rough starting, especially in 4low, with big tires. Most things break when people dump the clutch too fast.  Always feather the clutch till you can feel the driveline slack being taken up, then give her heck.

Suzuki has spent countless hours and $$ developing the ifs on our little trucks, believe me it is set up get the most life expectancy and  offroading ability it can give.  Sure calamini gives you a kit that will give you 3 inches of suspension lift, but at the cost of having severe driveline angles.  I dont know the exact figures, but for every 10 degree angle on the cv joint, the  life expectancy is cut in half.  roughly...  Also, how much power it can transmit  is affected.

I like straight axle front ends, they can sure take a beating.  But not on my tractor.  Ifs gives you better ride quality and better contact patch on uneven terrain.   I believe Ifs also weighs less.  The reason Jeeps come with live front end is because it's tried tested and true-  if it works, why change it?  That right there is american thinking.  (another good example is the small block chev - 40 years without a change) If you ever watch a BAJA 1000, look at the suspension- ifs in front, those guys know what works.

Keep her on a diet.   I mean your truck.  Weight is a great advantage, which is why sidekicks are so much better than heeps.   If you are going to carry twice as much weight, you will need twice as much power to do it.  You also need twice as much tire contact area as before.  I saw some pretty awsome tube bumpers done in the past, a guy I know put one on his full size chev that weighed 200 pounds.  no kidding, I almost got a hernia trying to lift it.  All the little extras add up.

It would be a nice rig, but the point of this thread is that there are advantages to IFS (clearance and weight) over straight axles.

As mentioned previously...apples to oranges.  IFS is great for pre-runner type stuff, baja racing, street driving etc.  But when it comes to rockcrawling, solid axle is the only way to go.  you would be hard-pressed to find an IFS competition rockcrawler i think!

How many ATV owners do a SAS? IS IT NOT POSSIBLE THAT IFS CAN WORK FOR OFF ROAD USE? It would seem so.

Also, are we talking about profesional rockcrawling here or real world wheeling? I doubt any SAS tracker is going to be more capable than Walker Evans IFS/IRS rig. So again, is it possible to build an IFS rig worthy of trail use? Again It would seem so.

Also has anyone noticed how simmilar an ATV is to a trackick? Coil sprung, Lower control arm, with struts, and cv shafts.  ::)
