Crankshaft Positioning Sensor.....Help!
« on: May 30, 2011, 11:18:38 AM »
I have 1996 1.8L Sidekick Sport.  Just bought it with the Service light on.  Code #P0335 which indicates Crankshaft Positioning Sensor.  Can't seem to find it!!  Wondered if the Camshaft positioning sensor was one of the same???  I have also learned that this model is DistributorLess.  Is this part of my problem??? Any help would be appreciatied.  Thanks.

I'm not sure on the 1.8, but on the 1.6 the CPS is located in the front
of the engine, and reads a star wheel that is on the snout of the crank.

It could be seen from under the truck looking up at the crank pulley, there
is a U shape in the oil pan and the sensor fits into the oil pump housing.

I would start looking there to see if you can find it, there isn't really any
better place to mount the crank sensor, so I would think it hasn't moved
locations too much between the 2 engines.

Good Luck

On the 1.8 it's, so to speak, "behind" the flywheel - which really means it's in front of the flywheel, since the flywheel is at the very back of the engine - anyway - you have to remove the engine or the transmission, and then the flywheel to get to it.

What was that you said Wild?  There really isn't a better place, so you would think it hasn't moved - well - Suzuki did move it, and as far as I'm concerned, they put it in the worst possible place.

Looking at the FSM for the J20A engines GV (the engines are very similar and actually use the same block & head), the cable from the crank position sensor comes up and around the right side of the head, so there is probably a connector somewhere underneath the intake manifold.

The troubleshooting shows a 2 pin connector and resistance checks - it should be between 484 & 656 ohms pin-to-pin, and greater than 1M from either pin to ground.

Ideally you also want to verify that the harness has no broken wires between the sensor connector and the ECU.

I have limited information on the 1.8 - the wires coming off of the crank position sensor should be orange/blue and white/blu wires - they change at the connector becoming orange and white (in other words they both loose their blue stripe) and connect to the ECU on D4 & D5 for a 1996 1.8 SideKick.

Well you do get better resolution from the pickup when you put it out there at the end of the flywheel
but as far as positions, PITA, unless you can remove it with 1 bolt and pull it out of the bell housing

Good Luck, I hope it's a bad wire or plug

If only it were at the end of the flywheel - it's behind it - and reads the teeth of a "gear like" portion of the crankshaft.

The FSM instructions for removal & replacement say to drop the transmission and remove the flywheel or flexplate.

:o That is a pain, I would be checking out the harness and sensor with a meter first

Here's a link to the engine wiring that may help

Please note - this does not show a crank position sensor, but it does show two cam position sensors - based on the J20 FSM I believe the "camshaft position sensor 1" is the one you're looking for
