Summer and no A/C in tin top. Is it real bad?
« on: May 30, 2011, 03:03:58 AM »
I have an 86 tin top with no A/C. Wondering if it's a bad idea to go out in the desert here in SoCal in the summer? What is your experience going out with no A/C on hot days?

LOL. I don't mind the heat too much but my wife tends to shrivel up in the heat. Wondering if it is really unbearable or typically not too bad? I did fix the fan switch in our Samurai so air blows from the vents now. I guess I could mount a mister bottle in front of the vent for her...

A good thick headliner and white top helps!

The old Rovers used a tin sheet over the top of the roof with some ~1/2 to 3/4" spacers
as a heat shield, I would think that could help you too, and adding some insulation to
the inside would be good.

The extra tin on top is like a heat shield around a turbo, it stops the "microwaving" effect
of the heat that you will feel if you don't have it or good roof insulation.

I ran this scenario through my top secret calculator and found the following:

A:
A happy and comfortable wife is worth more than the time/trouble to install A/C.
and
A wife that actively has fun/comfortable wheeling experience is less likely to bitch at "honey I just have to have this for my...." expenditures.

I might start selling these new calculators. :)

I did put some foam floor insulation inside as a roof liner to stop heat/cold from radiating through as much. I like the idea of painting the top of the roof white! That should help a lot. It's been rolled once already so cosmetic appearance is not a top priority. Just finished this morning replacing the rear axle bearings and seals, rear brakes and wheel cylinders, and got the mini spool installed. Wife wanted to go out so I had to stop before I got a chance to bleed the brakes. Hate being that close to finished and not finish the job.

Here is my Samurai.

BTW, who is Zig?

Zig is a long time ZukiWorld member, Bryan Zeigler and his user handle is Zukipilot
so you see the confusion your user name can cause

I registered first, or thought I did, under another name. Not sure what happened but I think I didn't get the registration activation email. I wonder if I can change it to the original name I wanted?

Not to worry, but he was registered Mar-24-2003, just a few years before you  ;)
Actually he is a member of the ZukiWorld Online Staff. We have been neck and
neck for the title of ZukiWorld Loudmouth for the most posts on the forum for
years now, I have lost count, but we are both up there

I was able to recover my original user name password! It was about 18 months ago when I registered and I forgot I had actually even made a couple posts here already. Dang, my memory is shot.  :-\  So I will retire this name and continue to use my original name which is PilotSmith. Don't want people to start wondering why Zig is asking so many newbie questions.   :)
