2011 - USA 500 Reno, NV
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:28:28 PM »
Well, I have the time off and am still up for driving down.  Do we have any additional information about time of day, how many laps we are running, and what additional requirements there are beyond a fuel cell?

Is this still going to be hosted in Sparks?

Hey Kris - The best source for information on race logistics for this race will be the Vorra website. http://www.vorra.net if you notice along the left hand side they have a column with informational posts about the upcoming races. The next race is Yearington 300 and that's the one they're informing racers/public on now. I would assume that shortly a similar post will come up for the USA 500 race.

Our ruleset is compatable so you shouldn't have to do anything extra if you've got our set covered.

Distance is still a bit up in the air... I wanted to talk with all the teams and see what the consensus was. Look for an email.

Here's how their race information looks.  http://vorra.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=218:yerington-details&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=56

Thanks.  Just want to make sure my bases are covered.  Don't want to go all the way down there and be stuck in the pits.  :)

Lets see...

/enthusiastic sarcasim on/
driving 10 hours there, sleeping in the cab of the truck the 1st night half way there, the other nights "camping/RVing" in a casino parking lot in the back of dodge truck under a tonneu cover, no fridge, no campfire, no shower, eating cold brats, beef jerky trail mix and cheeze sticks, drinking warm water, apple juice and gatorade. Riding out in the hot sun, dust blowing everywhere, trying to get the GPS to work while recreating "PEARNS SUZUKI JUMP" (... google it if you haven't seen it, "friends have said" - you might get just a bit motion sickness), not using blinkers on any turn, hitting every bump, aggresive shifting ( oh wait, I forgot we are in a race) (a motor mount might decide to go do something other than hold the motor steady and granade the outer casing of the clutch cable), turning your rig into a lawn jart ( WILL change your alignment, cause a headlight to dangle from your light bar ... and knock the fuel pickup tube loose inside your fuel cell make your engine very thirsty)
 /enthusiastic sarcasim off/

...And hutch says... "great race and a ton of fun" is like saying "last I knew there were a couple gallons of water in the ocean"  :P

I had blast!!!!!!!   I got to spend the weekend with a lot of great people. I had the opportunity to be with some great racers as the team kicked some a** in a PINK tracker!!!!  What an incredible day !!!!!!

Not for one second did I ever think about being somewhere else doing something else. I'd do it all over again next weekend if I could. I think I'll leave everything packed just in case I find out someone will be there next weekend.

If there is anyone that is ever "kinda" thinking about going ... GO!!!!!!  If you ever thought about running away from home and joining a circus, screw that. RUN AWAY FROM HOME AND JOIN A RACE!!!!!

To be fair, I dont think popping the clutch is what broke the motor mount.  It may have something to do with a several hundred pound engine bouncing on it for hundreds of miles.
I am glad you had a great time.

ok, ok, ok... I might have gotten a little worked up about the whole clutch thing.  So if I just leave everything in the truck and go back next weekend do you think someone will be running the course and they will let me work on thier pit crew?  :-\

So what happened to the DNF trucks that prevented them from
finishing the race? Kind of wondering what the weak points are.

I see how racing leads to better vehicles, build it, break it, build
it better, this carries over into street as well as mild built off road
vehicles

We blew out a clutch cable, Drone blew one out too. I dont know if his gave way where ours did. Eric had trouble with a spindle. A few blown tires.  Luckly we didn't have any tire issues.

We finished with what I consider to be a normal amount of breakage.  The left motor mount started settling and allowing the engine to sit lower in the chassis. The clutch cable started rubbing on the power steering pulley untill it sawed through.  We were able to support the cable with some pliers, electrical tape, and zip ties and it made it till the end of the race.  The other problem we had was the fuel pick up tube came up out of the foam in the fuel cell and was laying across the top of the foam causing us to run out of gas. This was shorlty after I missjudged a sharp hill and took some major air and a very hard landing.  The fuel line may have been caused by that but I dont know for sure yet.  We didnt have any flats.
Its pretty rare to get to the finish line in a desert race without having to repair something and you definately iron out the weak spots over time.
