Fuel pump issues!!
« on: May 10, 2011, 07:39:51 PM »
Well to start off i replaced my fuel pump (mechanical) 87 sami because it was pourin oil out of vent tube. K replaced it with a new pump ran fine for around 10 sec. then died. Pulled line off carb and no fuel. Took pump back put another new pump on it and same thing. Alson no difference when i pulled the fuel filter out? >:( Any ideas?

Can you pull gas up from the pump by using suction on the line?  You might have a split fuel line in the back somewhere.

Ok checked pump and its working thinkin maybe the pushrod that moves the rocker arm on the pump might be stickin? Is this possible and how do i get it out?

I thought that the pump was run off the cam shaft.  When my fuel pump went out I just replaced it with an electric, so I'm probably the wrong person to troubleshoot this.  :D

If I'm not mistaken, I think the cam sprocket has a small metal cup on the front of it that opperates the fuel pump. I have heard of the cam bolt getting a little lose and stops pumpin fuel when the cup(which has a hole drilled off center) is push off I'ts seat.

I found a link on Acks Faq that gives you the technical design of the fuel pump.  Maybe that will help you figure out what is going wrong.

Good to hear you got it working.  Probably an air bubble somewhere.

I have an older owners manual for Sammy's that has instructions for a "Manual Priming Lever"
on the bottom side of the fuel pump. Same style my "English Fordson Major Diesel Tractor" has.
Before I when to a electric pump, I was hunting parts houses for this style pump.

Maybe the factory had a clue?
