Timing issue
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:19:36 PM »
Alright so I pulled my timing cover off to find a melted tentioner. Im replacing it , obviously,  but my problem here is that i do not have a timing light and was wondering if anyone had a pic of there belt on the pullys lined up,  and if i could possibly be able to match them up as to correct my timing.  any other help on how to set up timing would be greatly appreciated.  thank you very much in advanced.

the timing light will come in handy when you reset your ignition timing, but it sounds like you are first gonna have to set your valve timing: the relationship btwn. crank and cam shafts.
that is by lining the crank sprocket with a mark on the oil pump(1.3L), the cam mark aligned w/a notch on the back belt cover piece(screwed to head) and install belt, adjust tensioner, adjust valves, reassemble everything else, set ign.time close enough to run, start.
this is where the timing light comes in.
mabe ack faq has that part of the manual online?
it would be best to look at one to avoid worry or worse....
sorry i have no pic.

I imagine a timing light is something some auto stores may rent/loan. You could try your local ones.

You shouldn't need a timing light to change a timing belt & tensioner pulley.

If the belt is still in place turn the engine by hand until the marks line up before removing the old one and when you install the new one everything will still be correctly timed.

The last belt change I did the belt had lost half the teeth - I lined up the crank and the cam, put the new belt & tensioner on, reassembled, turned the key and drove off - never once touched the distributor.

yes i should have been a little more intelligent b4 i posted this,  the dist timing seems to be ok,  im sure its not prefect but its running decently,  when the tensioner melted,  i fd up the valve timing  i lined it all back up with the marks and she fired right up.  but while we are near the subject has anyone have one melt like i did,  it looks like it ceased and th timing belt just ripped it to shreads.

Never on a Suzuki car but my buddies Ducati seized it's cam belt tensioners while we wer on a ride and it locked the motor, bent everything in the top end. when we pulled the covers off one belt had burned through, the other looked fine.
