Yosemite, sounds great. Is there anywhere to wheel there, like rugged mountain trails or something like that?
Yes there is...
The only place I know of is the Rubicon Trail, Yosemite
is a tourist trap kind of place and a National Park
True, wild Yosemite is the tourist place but there are some decent trails around here too. The most popular trail is Bald Mountain trail, it's very easy and virtually everyone who has a 4x4 hits it. I haven't been on it yet. They have a "Moonlight Madness" nighttime run which just happened two weekends ago I think on the 15th or 16th.
There's Coyote Lake trailhead which takes you to several trailheads. The only trail I've hit was the Strawberry Lake trail, from what I've heard it's an "intermediate" skill level trail, and I did it in my 3" lifted Tracker with stock gears and 235s. I was slipping the clutch a lot but now I have the 4:1 and I can't wait to get back on that trail again.
There's Brewer/Swamp trail which is a little harder.
The best trail around here, so Ive heard, is the Dusy-Ershim trail. It is comparable to the Rubicon trail (so I've heard). It passes through a wilderness area so you are only allowed like 30 or 60 feet off the trail either on either side. It takes about 3 days to complete.
I'm drawing a blank on the rest, those are the first ones that come to mind though. Yosemite is off of CA-41, all of these trails are in the Shaver Lake-Huntington Lake area off CA-168. Generally within a short drive from Fresno to the local mountains though.
