16 valve running strange
« on: December 09, 2010, 10:20:33 PM »
I am looking at  92 kick with the 16 valve. the guy says ''It doesn't rev up past 3k when you stab the throttle.  If you rev it up very slowly then it will rev up.  It just goes into open loop any time you try to give it throttle.  It is Auto.'' he says it is a bad TPS and there are over $200 new. I have a TPS for and 8 valve, but I dont know if it will fit or not. does anyone have any answers?

8V and 16V TPS are not the same

that is what I figured. so does it sound like a bad TPS or something else?

Not sure, it could be the TPS, MAF or an O2 sensor, and
there is also a crank position sensor that could be throwing
the timing off causing the issue

I would suggest doing a compression check on it.  That sounds like what was happening to my 95 4-door...and I had two cylinders with low compression.

does a 92 model engine have a crank sensor?

It does if the oil pan has a U in the front of it.

I thought all 16V engines did, and I didn't think that
92s came with 16V engines, but I forgot to look at
your also  :-[

92 16Vs don't have a CPS.
96 was the first year for a CPS on a 16V.

TPS's are not the same between 8Vs and 16Vs.  92-96 16V TPS's are the same, then they changed them in 97 to a different style.

Usually 16Vs will throw a code, if there is something wrong with the TPS or MAF.
The non-revving could be from a bad ECM.....could be restricted/clogged EGR passages.....or could be ???

My 2 cents: if it's not throwing any codes, I'd suspect something simpler 1st, like clogged air filter or cat converter... or both... or in desperate need of a tune up. If you can, before you buy: put the diagnostic jumper on it & see if it's throwing code 12. If it's high mileage, compression is possible ofc, so do a compression test. '92 is also in the years of bad ECU caps, & maybe they're marginal but not yet causing total failure? Ask the PO when the last tuneup/air filter/exhaust work was done, & try to get as much history as possible. Might just be a simple fix or might be...  :(  :o  :'(

My 91 was an 8-valve, and my 92 was a 16 valve.  The CPS came with the OBDII ECU's, airbags, and rounded dashes, in 96.
