One of the best ways to get some travel would be to get rid of the shackle lift and switch to a SPOA (Spring Over Axle) lift and some longer shocks.  YJ springs with folding shackles would be your best bet staying with springs, or you can switch to a full coil over suspension.

You don't want to run without shocks.  It makes your vehicle a road hazard and is unsafe at any speed.

To each their own.  I still like running shocks, just measure out your flex with the shocks pulled off then figure out how to mount them without restricting anything.  Best of both worlds.  :)

I agree, yj springs are the way to go, i have them on my samurai with the SKY BRACKETS, they are a simple install, but you will need longer driveshafts, brake lines, shocks and do some modifying to your shock mounts, i cut the inner fenders to get the most travel out of my front suspension. I did all the fabrication to mine myself so i saved a little. good luck

If you are stuck with your spring setup that you have now, I would atleast get longer shocks. This way you can keep the shocks as they will help off road as well.
I really like the Trail Tough YJ missing link setup. Rides smooth and flexes decent too.

.
The install isn't too hard. I did mine in the garage of my apartment.
Here are the online instructions of the TT kit :
