URGENT! 1.3 to 1.6 swap info
« on: October 20, 2010, 02:03:12 PM »
Sorry guys I know i should of searched it first but I just am aggravated.

I'm in the process on swapping my new hardtop with a 1.6l. i have a gm alternator and bracket for it. well the 1.6l serpentine belt pulley I.D. is to small for to fit on the shaft of the GM ALT. so i was going to swap the pulleys from the 1.3L and do a V-belt. Well I just discovered that the Crank timing gear is different on the 1.6 compared to 1.3. (1.6 has 6 bolt holes with different clogs and the 1.3 has 4 bolt holes with different clogs) Also the Cam gears are different (clogs) and the 1.6l timing blet is longer.

Am I able to swap the 1.3L cam gear/crank gear and timing belt to the 1.6L?

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks -Bob

No, the tooth shape is different from each other, one is rounded
and the other is square, but if you could find a belt that would
work you have it solved.

There was a post covering this same problem you have, I think he
did some custom thing with the pulley on a lathe, you might want
to see if you can have the same thing done to solve your problem

It'a almost like DejaVu!

In the thread that wild refers to, the most ecomonical way to solve the problem is to redrill the crank accessory pulley for the 5-bolt (not 6 unless there's voodoo magic afoot!) mount of the 1.6 crank timing belt pulley.  The result is a pulley that fits without having to remove the crank timing belt gear and redrill it (what I had done).  Removing that gear pulley is definitely NOT a good thing to do if you can avoid it!

There is a slight problem with this process:  you will have to create a new TDC mark on the edge of the 1.3 v-belt pulley as you'll need to rotate the pulley slightly to get the new holes to line up.

I hope that you haven't already installed the engine...

I hope that this helps!

I meant 5. I was Fury Typing!  I apologize.

So, You guys nailed it. The Clogs are different and also the 1.3 cam gear will not work on the 1.6 head due to the pin on the stub of the cam is longer than the 1.3 pin so the bolt is unable to be tighten to keep the gear on unless you shorten the pin.

The biggest issue is the timing belt. It is possible to use the 1.3 cam/crank gear with modification but the 1.3 timing belt is to short. You will have to find a longer timing belt.

What I ended up doing is taking a washer and I notched it so I can put the one bolt that aligns up with the 1.6 cam gear and the 1.3 pulley on still and the washer sit over the pulley to add some security to make sure the pulley doesn't fly off.

Ill have pictures tomorrow.

when i did my 16v in my sami i got a alternator pulley off an 92 s10 so i could use a serpentine belt the belt number i used is dayco 5040340 its 34" long the pulley swap took 5 minutes super easy.   The pulley is wider than it needs to be but i have had no issues

The pin should pull out of the end of the cam, so you could swap the pins.  Or you could lightly grind on the end of the pin to shorten it.
Explain to me again what you did.  I hope you are not saying that the crank pulley (you said cam, but I am thinking you meant crank) is only held on with one bolt and you have a washer added for "extra security".  If so, then it is possible that the pulley will work back and forth over time and wallow the pulley.  Plus, it will make trying to set the timing very difficult, since it won't be accurate.  Just redrill the pulley bolt holes, so you can bolt it on with the bolts, like it is supposed to be.
