ok so my defrost works but once I switch to the other symbols to get warm air to my feet and the other dash vents all I get is cold air. do any of you guys know what this problem may be?

vacuum lines that operate the "doors" are bad or the door that changes it from defrost to floor to vent is stuck??

No vacuum servos on a Samurai, from what I have learned,
heat only flows out of the defrost vents, not out of the dash
vents, I'm not sure about the feet/floor vents, but that is normal
in a Samurai

I drove to Moab one year with only a Duster cover and a Bikini top, I about
froze to death once I left California, I left with 70-80* weather and ended
up in snow covered peaks at 7000' no amount of heater did any good, I had
on my jacket and motorcycle gloves, and put all the spare clothes I could find
on my legs to try and keep warm, needless to say it was a miserable trip that
year.

My heater will cook you. But That's one of the reasons I wanted a Tin top. There is a wire cable that runs down to a little flap door by the tranny tunnel. When you move the lever, it opens and closes the flap. Closed you get defrost open  and  you get floor heat. Sometimes it gets loose or the flap gets stuck.

Heat will only come out of the defrost or floor vents, because of where the heater core is located and how the HVAC piping is set up.  If you clean out the heater core, the heat coming out of the floor vents should keep you warm enough (assuming you have a full top on).  Even a bikini with a windjammer should be good enough, but a full top is better.

That might be easier, but it is a half-assed way of cleaning it.  I had quite a time getting all the crap out from between the fins, with it out of the vehicle.  If I would have just drilled a hole and sucked out what I could, I would have been wasting my time.  Mine was full of pine needles, leaf pieces, dirt, and who knows what else.  I recommend, if you are going to do it, take the time and do it right.

Thanks Drone for pasting the IZook link. I kinda like the "half assed" (Sky-H's term)  method for continued maintenance once you have it proprly cleaned.

With no window your at the mercy of a complete tear down each time. At least with a window you can do a simple PM (preventive maintenance) every once in a while and maybe keep a warm smile on your face..... ;-}
It also ain't bad if on the 1st go round you find the heat you were looking for!

you may not have to clean anything. look on the firewall where the radiator hoses go into the cab. there is a valve attached to the hose and there is a small wire the hooks onto a lever. it could be disconnected, mine fell off. when i re attached it i got all the hot air i needed

I just did the holesaw and vac thing to mine like 10 mins ago.  what a diff  compared to tearing the heater out  easy simple fix.  I did use my air compressor to fluff the stuff  (gently) from the bottom.  when I had my  shopvac stuck over the hole I drilled.  at least 6 inches of crap in there   no wonder my heater didn't work worth a  darn.
