Im gonna be upgrading my exhaust system soon, and i wondered what kind of difference in sound there is between running a turbo style muffler versus a glass-pack (cherry bomb )?

Im running a 1.6 16v with a K&N that already makes the truck kinda loud, witch isnt a problem, but it sounds kinda "ricey". Ive heard that a glass-pack for this engine will make it sound like one of those coffee can speed bump scrapers. Maybe its just hearsay, but thats not exactly the sound im after.

I could be wrong but I don't think a glass-pack would make it sound like a little "rice burner", a Resonator would though. A glass-pack goes in line right after the cat but a Resonator goes at the tip back near the rear bumper you could talk to a good muffler shop though to find out more I have heard both before and I would chose the glass pack if i had to (I like the Dynomax turbo muffler I have on my Zuk though) if I had the money though I would have gotten a Flowmaster.

I did a glass pack on mine for a few weeks and took it off.... Very loud and raspy.... the 1.6 8V through an 18 or 24" glass pack was realy loud. I went to a flowmaster after that and loved it.

I have a 12" glass pac and it is loud and sounds a bit deeper than a rice burner, but remember a samurai is a rice burner so call it what it is.  For me it's all about function, a glass pack holds up better to a rock and you can get the whole exhaust system tucked up better with one.  One good hit on a flow master or turbo muffler and it could kill your day, I deal with the sound.

LOL unless you lowered your Zuk it is not burning the rice, only flying over it or just through it. That is why I don't call them rice burners (yes I know it is where they are from)

Ok, im gonna have to say, I dont consider my zuk a "rice burner". It is japanese i guess, but i still want to at least let myself believe that its on a higher level.

Zukipilot; what flowmaster muffler do you use?

Ive seen/ heard a 24" glass pack style muffler (not a resonator) on a 1.6 8v motor (...loud and raspy...), but does the 16v sound any different?

i have a 16v in my sammy i run a 40 series flowmaster i love it

When I was putting my Calmini header on, I just couldn't resist firing it up, with open pipes.  The best description of the sound I have heard so far is "pissed-off bumble-bee".  You can't turn that sound into a V-8 rumble, no matter what you do.  Best to just hang the flowmaster on there, and be surprised when your J**p-wheeling buddies ask "is that thing running?"

I am currently running a HushPower by Flowmaster on my V-6. Previously I believe it was a 40 series that I ran on the old kick with the 1.6..... contrary to what thefirstzukman believes... the flowmaster is made of thick plate and will not crush from trail use. I ran the same 40 series muffler for 5-6 years after getting tired of replacing turbo / stock style mufflers that were destroyed by trail use and have sat the entire weight of the vehicle on flowmasters and barely left a scratch.

Also, if your looking for a muffler that allows better trail clearance. Flowmasters fit tight to the belly of the Kicks and only hang down 3.5" (if I remember correctly).

Very true.. I heard that many times with the calmini Header, flowmaster and 2.25 exhaust.... And they never believe you when you smile and tell them it's stock

Similar question...  putting a 2.0 VW gas engine in, can i reuse my cat from the 1.3 sammy engine? i dont have to pass emisions fyi

and if i have 2" from the header do i have to have 2" into muffler/cat or can i modify it to fit?

It would be best to have the same size all the way through, 2" is usually
good enough for a 2.0, but I would use whatever size the factory used
for that engine, or a little larger.

I have always loved the power of the VW engines (water cooled) and
thought a 1.8 GTI 8v engine (101 hp) would be perfect, but that 2.0
I think is a 16V would be much better, and a turbo would make it perfect

thats what i was thinkin but he seemed to think a supercharger would be better for offroad.  I think the header comes out as 2" which is prolly what id keep unless someone was very persuasive

whats the benefit to something like a flowmaster 40 series and a glasspack like a cherrybomb?  Ive only heard about glass packs being used to make everything alot louder

Get a quiet type but good flow muffler, 4 bangers IMO never
sound that good noisy
