Torque wrench

Torque wrench

I know easy thing to find, but I cant seem to find one. I have an old school 1/2 drive needle style torque wrench that works, but only reads ft lbs. I relized I need a inch lbs. torque wrench to finish putting my motor back together. the only thing I found that has the right torque range is a 1/4inch drive. where do you think I can find one?

Most 3/8" drive torque wrenches are calibrated in inch pounds.

Try your local auto parts store tool section

Or look for a 1/4" one for those bolts that need only 5-8ft/lbs.

HarborFreight has both the 1/4" and 3/8".

I have found a lot of torque wenches, but the torque range is wrong. the 1/4 drive from harbor fright says 20-200 inch lbs, but all my hexhead bits are 3/8 drive. the 3/8 drive is 5-80 inch lbs. and a lot of the torque specs. are higher then 80.

I had the same type of problem, and solved it at Schuck auto by buying a set of adaptors for 4 or 5 bucks that convert my half inch drive stuff to 3/8 or 1/4 and also the reverse.

Or you can get all three sizes of torque wrench, 1/4, 3/8ths and 1/2. I know their expensive but they are worth every penny, especially if you do a lot of work.

I have 2 torque wrenches....one 1/4" drive that is in inch pounds and one 1/2 drive that is in ft.lbs.  Then I have a set of adapters that I convert to 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2, as needed.  I bought everything at Harbor Freight.  If you catch the wrenches on sale, you can pick them up for between $12 and $25.  The 1/4 one will be the more expensive one, ironically.

But don't they charge you shipping?  By the time you pay that you are probably better off just going into the store...or wait until they run it on sale....either online or in the store....stores will generally match the online price, if it is lower.
I have a lot of HF tools...people like to cuss them as "one time use" tools....but they have all held up very well compared to what I would have spent buying craftsman, mac, snap on, etc.  I have broken very few, and the ones I have they replaced without hassle.
