what is the cheapest engine swap?
« on: September 13, 2010, 06:45:50 AM »
I have a stock 1.3L in my 87 samurai now and would like to start saving up for an engine swap but have no clue which one to go with. Does anyone have any input on what would be the cheapest since I wont be able to save much with going to school and with my 1 year old? I am just tired of lagging on the highway and would like more power on the highway and when I decided to go four wheelin possibly.

That would probably be the 1.6 out of a SideKick or Tracker, and go with the 8V to avoid any hassle with fuel injection.

personally, if I were going to do what you are looking to do, I would just check the compression on your stock 1.3L.... if it's good, and strong, you have the header, cold air, etc... what I would do is look into the my-side 2 from zukesoffroad.com and let the power come alive... then you don't have to mess with computer for the TBI or wiring. just bolt it on, set it to your likings with the different jets from a Harley shop, they are like way cheap.... a cpl of bucks will get you a main and an pilot jet... then you can have the power and pony's go rippin right through your trans, tcase and to your wheels... it wont stall on hills, angles, no matter what angle you put your sammy on... I strongly recommend that set up... I was turning 35's with a 1.6L 8V from a sidekick at 75mph oh the highway, I don't see any reason a 1.3l wouldn't turn 31's or maybe 33's the same. Just my .02

well I hear that in davis county here in utah that you cant pass emissions with the weber or other aftermarket setups. I would really like to get the aftermarket ones since my stock on has a bad mixture control solenoid and I took two spare ones to a mechanic buddy and after 3 weeks he still hasnt touched them.

Where's the best and cheapest place to get the myside setup?
Anybody willing to sell me a 1.6L 8v head for cheap?  I live in woods cross, utah 84087

yea I know the smog crap sucks... I used to live in wx... right off of 1500 So and 8th W. But I have, or had buddies working in shops to take care of things like this for me... I might have a friend who can take care of you after an aftermarket set up.... might cost you a bit more, but for the performance and power gains, who cares about 25 extra bucks right?!  I will shoot him a message and see what it would take and I would need to know when you would want to do this. just post up here, or shoot me a pm. might be a week before I get back to you, I start my work week on thursday. then i will be back off on the next wed.

you used to live near me. I live in the apartments at 842 W. 1500 S. I get paid next week and would be able to possibly do it then. If I can sell my hard top I may be able to do it sooner.

Are you saying that even with an aftermarket carb set up that I can pass emissions here?
Ive been looking at a weber carb set up for $249 but is the myside setup cheaper?
Do you think I can get much by selling my carb with a bad mixture control solenoid?

1. yes I was right off of 875 west. as a kid of course, that was long ago..... but lived in bountiful for some years after..
2. yes, with a weber or with a myside set up, I can have it passed, not that it's a good thing to do, but for a zuk member, I might be able to pull some strings, shhhhhh......    ;)
3. webers are cheaper than the myside setup... look at the link I posted, or look clicky here --->http://www.zuksoffroad.com/MY-SIDE-2-Harley-Carb-CV-kit-wintake_p_16.html
or here -->http://www.zuksoffroad.com/MY-SIDE1-Harley-Carb-CV-kit_p_15.html  either one will work and bring that motor alive... it's up to you, and it won't stall out like a weber, and you won't have to re-jet it again and again...
4. personally, I wouldn't buy a samurai hitachi carb, unless I was going to use it just to practice rebuilding them, but I wouldn't give but a few bucks for it, maybe like 25 at most... but that's just me.... I will shoot him a message and post back tomorrow on what he says, it's not a promise, but shouldn't be an issue... wait till tomorrow on rushing into things... lemme post back ok...

thanks man I will look for the pm. I get paid the 24th and will buy the weber kit then unless I can sell my top sooner and I will let you know if so and when the carb is ordered and such. I already passed safety and turned that into the state so all I need to do is get the carb on do emissions and im set.
