It's best to try and take it to Autozone or Checker/oReilly and pull the codes.

My GV did the same thing (minus the smoke) and I tried everything to fix it and ended up selling it.  I cleaned the MAF, the MAP, the ICV, changed out the intake, ran seafoam twice, changed the oil, checked linkages, etc.

How many miles are on the engine?  My problems didn't start until AFTER I ran seafoam through the booster vacuum hose on the valve cover side.  After that she never ran the same.

What events led up to the engine issue?  Overheat? Low oil?

I have not herd of the parts stores here in Canada doing the free diagnostic thing. For the price of having a garage do it I am better off buying a cheap one at princess auto (canadas harbor freight). Just hate to buy another knowing mine is around here somewhere.

The vehicle has around 80000 miles on it. other than the service engine soon light nothing led up to the problems.

It has been ticking or rattling something like a diesel but the dealer told me it should be fine until it gets allot louder. I am thinking if it was timing chain related it would not be intermittent.

where in Canada do you live? have you ever changed the fuel filter? tune up?

did you just wash the engine by any chance?

and here is an interesting one, any welding to the truck?  exhaust work? anything?

a friend on mine's 2.5 ran the same after he did some welding to the truck with the batt connected (solid axle swap exc) anyway, he fried the comp while doing it.

Two likely possibilities are the MAP sensor and the Crank Position Sensor.

But you can't start changing things on spec; you need to read the codes.

I'm with Ian.  I'm thinking the MAP sensor.  Salty little boogers too!!  Somewhere around a grand new or $100-200 if you can find one used.

if the maf is the case, my wife runs a home based auto parts business and can get good parts for good prices.

we are from Canada as well.

I'm silly, I wrote MAP and I meant MAF - is there a MAP as well (there isn't on mine, but it's OBD1)?

The MAF sensor is not sold separately by Suzuki - they provide only the complete throttle body!  Don't know about GM.

There are "remanufactured" MAF sensors in the aftermarket now.

Don't know how good they are, but they are reasonably cheap.

Try loosening your gas cap and see if it bogs down after you drive it a bit.

With a MAF sensor you don't need a MAP sensor unless you're turbocharged.   ;)

As for aftermarket gauges, I know you want to save $$, but we have a ScanGauge II and use it on all our vehicles (except an '84 Isuzu diesel).  You can use it as an aux gauge panel while driving, also.

Hope this is simple for you!

I just pulled the codes I get p1510 then it shows it as pending as well. This code is not in the book that came with the reader but a search shows it to be     ECM Back-Up Power Supply Malfunction. I am continuing to find what to do next but if anyone has some insight it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like an ECM problem - the FSM would say try a known good ECM.

Or could it just be a poor ground?

I did some more investigating today. I have been noticing a damp smell in the truck lately. As most of you probably know the ecm is on the passenger side, when I took the plastic cover off the bottom water ran out. It is coming from the seam around the fan. I also found evidence of mice on the filter behind the glove box.
So hopefully the water was causing an intermittent short and the ecm is not fried. I will dry it out and see what happens. Now to figure out where the water is coming from. I assume it is the air conditioning since it is not sweet.  Not looking forward to pulling the dash apart.
