Almost ready to tow but nervous
« on: August 22, 2010, 01:10:42 PM »
OK I have had my sammy 2 years now but have only wheeled locally but I am ready to venture out to some further locations. I got my receiver hitch and tow bar set up and it is my understanding I put the transfer case in neutral and  put the trans in 2nd gear but post like this make me nervous what and the odds of something like this?

remove your rear driveshaft when towing. then you will have nothing to worry about, the drivetrain will be isolated. and make sure your hubs are unlocked. the 15 minutes of work is worth the piece of mind.
88.5 Samurai 33" TSL, 6.5:1 Xcase Gears, 92" wheelbase, 3link rear, SPOA front w/ drop shackle, open/locked. Soon to be this spring: Toyota front and Dana44 rear w/ homemade offset.

I flat towed my 87 samurai with the t case in neutral and tranny in third gear 900 miles with no issues what so ever. Every time I stoped for fuel I started the samurai for a little bi cause the key was on.

follow the instructions :
http://www.petroworks.com/pdf/How%20to%20Flat%20Tow%20a%20Samurai.pdf

triple check everything and you should be fine.
these things have been towed thousands miles with zero issues.
If you do mess it up then it can be costly.... like alot of things in life.

If you are worried about it then rent a Uhaul trailer and be done.
Another option if you are going to tow alot is a driveshaft disconnect :

You can unscrew the shift knobs and take them off to make it harder for the gears to in gage and I would put the trans in fifth, this happend to a friends rig on a long trip and he got lucky with it just pumping oil up on the top end of the engine and lots of smoke for a while but his engine was screaming for several hours behind a 7.3 turbo diesel.

Am I missing something here??? Why can't you just put the transfer case in neutral? ???

You are supposed to put the t-case in neutral but it is not a true neutral....
read the entire page about why on this link :
