need help figuring out what a part is.
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:02:18 AM »
Please help me out in figuring what this part is. its located in the front of the aftermarket valve cover as you can see in the pictures and it looks like  the end was broken off and a bolt has some sealant on it and was shoved inside it to plug it.  I am not passing emissions here in utah and they are telling me it has too many hydrocarbons so im just trying to fix or replace all I can to help it pass.

Thank you, Brandon

its a hole for the squirrels to get in and out? :P or maybe you have the valve cover with the spare bolt holder option? :P
it appears to be a PCV (positive crankcase vent) hole.(serious this time)

I thought it looked like the pcv but it has no thread it just pushes in and I have a pcv in the intake manifold. if its a second pcv im wondering where I can find one specific for this that has no thread and where the hose would go too.

most of the time they just push in to a rubber grommet. could also just be a vent most aftermarket v8 covers have vents, don't know if one is needed on such a small displacement. ???

x2 on pcv... looks like you have a Metro valve cover on it (16v?) & that's where the pcv was on it. If you have both pcv lines (breather & valve line) then it doesn't matter that it's plugged. As for high HC I'd suspect the cat conv. Looking at your pic I'd replace that air filter too, it looks pretty cruddy.

thanks you guys. yes this is an old pic of the engine from when I picked this up a couple months ago and started working on it, the air filter was the first thing to be changed. why would someone put a metro cover on a samurai? whats the point of it?

Ya, Metro valve cover, change the oil too for reduced emissions, dirty oil
vapor sucked into the engine burns and adds HC to the exhaust. HC is also
the result of running too rich, the cat can clean it up, but if it's been rich
for a long time the CAT is probably bad too

You could reduce the HC levels with a generous dose of E-85, about 50-75%
if you can get it, in an empty tank 1 or 2 gallons should make it run clean enough
to pass the test

That hole is for a PCV valve.  It just pushes in the rubber grommet.  The way I have mine hooked up is I ran the hose from that PCV valve to the samurai PCV valve in the intake manifold.  Yes, I run 2 PCV valves....no reason, no benefit, that is just how I have it hooked up.
If you want a replacement PCV valve, you could get one for a 96 metro (has to have the 1.3, 16V engine).  A 1.6 16V trackick PCV valve is also the same one.
The reason for a metro cover....it seals up better than the crappy samurai stamped steel cover with the cork gasket.  Plus, a metro cover looks cooler than the samurai cover, IMO.

Would that cover also fit a 1.6L engine??? seems to me the Samurai
stock cover is the same as 1.6 so by default it should work right???

Yes, it fits the 8V.  Won't fit the 16V.

Cool, thanks, I think I might get one, the tin cover leaks so easy,
especially if you over tighten the bolts

Yep.  I run the metro cover on all my samurais.  They work great.  They do use the same valve cover bolts as the samurai too...which is a bonus.

Agreed, it looks better, I saw one before but couldn't figure out where it came from...now that I know it's from a Metro, maybe I'll look around.
What kind of gasket does it use, then?

Sweet.  Wonder if Hawk Suzuki has any... ;D
So a rubber gasket would be reusable, right?  Compared to the one-time use cork gasket.  That's the biggest advantage I see (besides looking bitchin'  :))
