isnt it like uber annoying with that 1st gear thing?    I HATE having to stop completely to get it in gear without forcing it and grinding gears.

Is your shifter sloppy as well?  Lots of movement?

mine WAS until I replaced the shifter bolt, and the bushing,  which helped, but I STILL have to be at full stop to get it in first gear.

Adjust the clutch, if that doesn't do it you may need new syncro's in the transmission.  They are pretty easy to rebuild though, it can be done in a garage with the right tools.

Every samurai I own and have ever owned shifted the same way.....most of the time I have to come to a complete stop, but on rare occasion it will slip into 1st just before I come to a complete stop.
I've never had problems with it shifting into reverse though.  Sounds like that could be a clutch, cable, or adjustment problem.  Or it could be that the tranny bearings and synchros need replaced.
When I rebuild my trackick tranny, I ordered a rebuild kit off of ebay....just make sure you get one that uses either USA or Japan made bearings......no chinese, mexican, etc. bearings.

I've had several transmissions that don't like going into reverse without jumping into 4th first.  It is usually either syncro or bearing related.

You can order transmission rebuild kits from most of the Suzuki Retailers that sponsor the board.  Or you can just get a rebuilt transmission for around 350 plus shipping.

If you are trying to shift from 5th, straight into reverse (while stopped, of course), then you can't.  There is a reverse lockout that prevents that.  All you have to do is shift from 5th, into neutral, then let the shifter go into the center position (this "unlocks" the lockout), then you can move the shifter back over and into reverse.
I'm assuming this isn't the problem, but I'm just throwing it out there, just in case.
