Bone stock 1992 2wd tracker - getting around to fixing a couple of things - question #1

Simulataneously, the A/C quit (the compressor clutch stopped "clicking") and the electric radiator fan is now running continuously.  There are a pair of relays on the passenger strut tower, one was clicking as soon as the ignition key was turned - so I unplugged the fuse next to it and the fan quit.  Been running it that way to keep from burning out the fan.

I'm guessing this is a relay problem, but the relays are bloody expensive ($30-$100+).  Anyone know how to test these things, or have a diagram of the circuit?

I am a british car mechanic, so I do understand wiring and how to use multimeters.  I'm useless when it comes to A/C though. 

There are two temperature sensors on the right front of the motor.  (I believe its the the back one) is a HIGH TEMP sensor that will turn on the AC fan if the heater fan is on (any speed, just on) and it detects higher temperatures.  If this sensor goes bad it could ground the relay (pulling it on), or rightfully your temperature may be a little bit higher causing it to turn the fan on.

When I removed my motor fan, I used this to prevent overheating when on the trail, cools it right down.

Note for posterity: the problem was a fatigued wire at the back sensor at the thermostat.  It finally broke, which made the problem easy to find.  Photo attached.

Yeah, I've used a multimeter once or twice - just dunno where to point it on these new-fangled Japanese contraptions.  <grin>
