new tires
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:10:27 AM »
I picked up a set of 235/75/15 Goodyear Wranglers |removethispart|@ Wally World and have been trying to decide what pressure to run them at I think I have the basic formula down but I might be wrong.

Factory tire 1746 lbs |removethispart|@ 44psi  door jamb says inflate to 26 psi.
New tire 2026 lbs |removethispart|@ 35 psi.

1746/44=1031.7272
35/2026 X 1031.7272 = 18 psi !

Are my calculations wrong?

Thanks

I guess you meant to type 1746/44*26=1031.7272

If so, the calculations are consistent, but I doubt that the assumptions impliicit in them are correct.  Could you please explain what the values for lbs and psi represent?

I believe the "lbs" he is referring to is the load capacity stamped on each tire carcass.

I'd run them at 30-32 pounds and call it good.  I keep my 235/75/15s at 32 as well as my 235/70/15s.   My father in-law aired his OEMs down to 26 pounds for the "softer" ride.  18 pounds is a bit soft to be running on the hardball.

The tire sidewall says 1746 pounds max at a max inflation of 44 pounds per square inch the door jamb of my tracker says to inflate these tires to 26 pounds per square inch.  The factory tire I'm refering to is the Goodyear Wrangler RTS spare that I have

I suggest that the concept of proportionating the appropriate inflation pressure from max. load and max. inflation pressure is unlikely to hold good when tires are of a different build.  The ideal inflation pressure arises from a large number of factors, such as spring rate, damping, and steering geometry, as well as weight, and will vary according to the physical characteristics dictated by the carcass design.  Those characteristics involve max. load and pressure, but a great deal more.

When manufacturers develop a new model, they choose a tire and experiment to arrive at their sticker value.  That ideal value is not going to hold for a tire with different build characteristics, even when adjusted for the above tire data.  You need to experiment up and down from the sticker value, bearing in mind that higher values use less fuel, but reduce adhesion, and ideal inflation will result in even wear across the tread.  As always, engineering is a compromise.

Well said Ian. On the 97 the door jam # is 23lbs. I upgraded wheel and tires and found 26 to be a good compromise. On the `03 the sticker sz 26lbs, It's got oe size tires and the 26 is Ok. If I went to 235's I'd bump up at 2lb increments to find a decent balance between ride/handling/wear
Still standin'

I run 34 lbs in mine at the advice of the folks from Big O tires. It seems to be about right for comfort / low noise / and positive wear.
I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)
