30x9.50 or 31x10.50 tires on 15x5.5 wheels

Is this a good idea? Will it be stable on the road? What is the optimum wheel width for 9.5 or 10.5" tires?

I've got 33x9.5's on 5.5" rims and it's fine but not legal for me in OZ and I know of of someone who has put 10.50's on them but that's just wrong. 7" will do both sizes or you could go 8" for the 10.50's if you wanted. my 10.50's are on 7" rims.

Why aren't 33x9.50's legal for you?

How stable would 30x9.50's be on 5.5" wide wheels on the road?

My 30X9.5s on the stock rims are fine on the road.  It wanders a bit but I suspect that is due to the last off road adventure.  Time for another alignment and rotation.

There are Standards for tire to rim fitment that specify the appropriate rim sizes suitable for a given tire size. That's not to say you can't physically fit a tire to a rim outside these Standards but to keep it all correct with the Authorities we are required to stick to these requirements.

The 33x9.5's are quite stable on the road but due to the rim size and offset they do rub on the chassis on full lock.

I have a tyre fitment chart on my website, under Tech Info (nicked it from BFG I think, but they don't vary much)
