New Tracker owner with a couple questions!
« on: April 12, 2010, 09:52:08 AM »
Hey everyone,

I've been lurking on this site for quite some time.  I've always wanted to pick up a Sidekick or a Tracker.  The opportunity arose and I have just purchased a 2000 Tracker for my wife.  I'll post some pictures of it a little later.

My questions:

1.  I want to install a mild lift (2") to accommodate some bigger tires.  What are your recommendations?  I'd rather not go to the trouble of doing a body lift since the truck will be driven offroad very sparingly (I have 70 acres up north with some trails that I'd like to tackle with it at some point).

2.  What other wheels can I install on it?  I'd like to stick with a 15" rim, so what width and backspacing could I get away with on a mildly lifted Tracker?  Jeep wheels share the bolt pattern, what about width and backspacing?

3.  Are there any other cheap/free mods that I could perform on it to improve it right away?

Thanks everyone!  Looking forward to getting involved in this community!

Hey. I'm also a new owner. I have yet to do anything to my Vitara, but i'll share with you what I've learned:

1. For a 2"suspension lift: "Jeff's lift" is by far the cheapest and by the sounds of it he's got damn near 100% positive feedback. I'm sure I won't be the only person to suggest his lift kit.

2. Wheels: you're SOL :P . But in a all seriousness, I've never run into a vehicle that has so many issues with wheel fitment. The one universal truth i've found is that wheel spacers will solve your problems. Many people don't like using spacers, in which case you're options are severely limited. Try a search, there are plenty of threads on this topic all with different findings and results.

3. Nothing is free.

I have a 2000 Tracker and put stock 15" white spoke wheels from a 86-88 Sammie on it. The Sammie wheels can be reversed. I did a mild lift and run 235x75-15 BFG All Terrain AT's with no rubbing problems.
It's five o'clock somewhere!!

Samurai rims eh? With the rim reversed did they clear the calipers alright?? How much lift do you have?

I'd love to see some pics if you've got them.  ;D

Have about a 2" lift, coil spacers on the front, blocks on the shock mounts on the rear. No problem with calipers.

I can't believe after all the research I've done on fitting 15" rims, a set of Samurai steelies is all i need!

They are a dime a dozen!

I had a extra set of 8' wide rims off my '78 CJ5 I slapped on my '00 Tracker.  Needed 1/4" spacers to clear calipers.  Backspacing was about 3.5 inches?  I just took a rough measurement.

Good luck, and I wish you the best of luck!  These things are damn good in the woods.

Does anyone know the wheel dimensions on the Tracker?  Width, backspacing (offset)?

Standard steelies on 2nd Gen Trackers were 5.5"with 4.25" backspace on the rim.  Newer Trackers and ZR2s came with 6" alloy rims and I am not sure on the backspacing, but would guess they retained the 4.25".  Front end components remained the pretty much same.  Someone else will have to come up on the net to verify that one.
