Tranny issues, Please Help?
« on: April 03, 2010, 10:03:47 AM »
I own a 91 Samurai and have been stumped by a new problem. The transmission shifts fine when the truck is cold at start up but will not go into gear when it is warmed up. I have adjusted the cable with no better luck. Can anyone give some advise on this. I really don't want to pull the tranny only to find it wasn't needed. Thanks so much in advance.

Mine did something like this but it not sure if it will be same for you.  couple small things you can check. 1 tranny shifter bolt. It holds the shifter from being sloppy, mine was broke and while it didnt create a sloppy shifter it would cause the shifter to get stuck in 3rd gear.  Also the shift seat is another thing to check to see if its wore, maybe it will be on of these things and same some money.  Check the tranny shift rails to see if something is stuck down in there, maybe drain it and hopefully if anything is in there it will come out.

Check the clutch cable, the outer sheath is probably compressing
and not disengaging the clutch all the way

Thanks for the replies. None of these issues are my problem. The truck drives fine and shifts fine at start up. Once I drive four or five miles down the road it stops shifting. Push in the clutch and move from one gear to another and it wont go into gear. Shut the truck off and it will move threw the gears just fine. Let truck cool down it it will work again for a few miles. I am totally stumped on this. I have never come across anything like this before.

Or what was the oil last used??? A GL-5 oil I think it is (non yellow friendly)
can actually harm the syncros in the transmission,  hope this is not the case

It sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging, since it will shift into gear fine with the engine off.  An oil change/check would be a good idea.  If you see small shiny gold colored metal flakes in the oil, that is snychro pieces and means the synchros probably need to be replaced.
But the temperature change deal is odd.  That almost makes me think it is something internal to the tranny.  Or maybe the clutch cable is getting hot (from being close to the engine) and it malfunctioning for some reason when hot.

I used a mix of synthetic Lucas gear and a quart of
Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in my T-case with good results.

Most people don't think of ATF as having any gear oil
type properties, but as it works out, there are lots of
gears in an automatic transmission, and with the added
Lucas in the mix, it should make a nice light easy shifting
cold weather lube
