Clicking in my steering shaft.
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:06:31 PM »
There seems to be a clicking in my steering system that comes and goes.
When it is doing it the steering wheel has a noticable amount of play in it .When it isn't doing it it is normal no play.It seems to be comming from the lower universal in the steering shaft .Are these replacable or will I need a whole new shaft?I'm hoping it's not the steering box. It is manual steering.Any thoughts or ideas? Is there a shaft out of another vehicle that would fit or work with some mods?
Thanks!

That's what started happening to mine before I found the
gears in the box in chunks, finally I couldn't turn the steering
wheel and I had to change the box. The U-joints are not
replaceable, you need another shaft if it's bad.

What year trucklet do you have???

It's a 95 5spd two door 3" body 2" spring spacers 31" BFG mud terrains. If it looks like the steering box I'm going to start looking for the power steering set up for it.

If its the steering box, what exactly do you think adding power steering is going to do?      I already know,  absolutely jack squat.  adding systems to something that is broken doesnt help.  in fact it makes it DANGEROUS.

fix it right and just replace broken parts with new.  seriously thats the safest thing possible.

Correct me if I'm WRONG but adding power steering would give me POWER STEERING ! It would also give me a good STEERING BOX if my manual one is broken .You need to get the powersteering pump and the power steering box plus the hoses and brackets .So I believe that you are wrong if my box is bad and I change to Power steering it will give me a new safer box and it will also give me the desirable option of power steering.
Thanks!

You are correct, I put a power steering box on mine, no pump
and it was easier than my old box that was jacked up

Sorry, that was my bad.    I was thinking power steering kept the original steering box for some dumb reason.    its been a rough week for me.

since we're on the subject of it,  on a stock 1.3,  does adding power steering significantly reduce power output?

No problem Bobthebiker my response was quite tame compared to my first one. I know we are talking about a small hp motor but it has been my experience with bigger hp vehicles that a power seering pump isn't really that much of a drag.I'd say the difference will be minute so you may lose a tiny bit of power but you get the advantage of power steering which if you wheel it any will be a big benifit.

A power steering pump only requires significant amounts of power
when turning the wheels, in some cases you could stall an idling
engine by turning the wheels hard into a hillside/rock etc. other than
that, it's not really using much, just circulating the fluid to the box and back

I dont see myself doing rock climbing, or anything more serious than mild offroading.   I just want power steering because my mom will probably use it to go to church on sundays, and she's got a little bit of a medical thing, so less strain is good for her.
