transfer case reduction question
« on: February 15, 2010, 11:24:43 AM »
transfer case gears.
ok  got a question for everyone.
32 inch tires on my samurai.  what transfercase gears should I run so I can drive freeway (with out turning 4 grand)
keep decent millage and pull 5th.  I pull 5th right now with stock gears. all day long, (not a stock 1.3 ) just slight grades and wind slow me down.
running 30 inch tires at the moment.  been told to do the 4.90:1 gears.  does that sound right.?
thanks

I would go to 5:1 in the transfer case that should work up to a 33 inch tire and give you what you want.  You can also switch out your ring and pinion gear from a tracker and this will also reduce your gearing most of the tracker use 5.38's there are a few variations depending on year.  Switching out your ring and pinion is pretty cheap if you can find a tracker in a junk yard.

What is your desired 'freeway' speed?

If your just looking for a little drop I agree with maddoghd, just go with the 4.89:1 kit.

For a transmission calculator you can take a look at http://www.solemnwarning.net/transmission/ as we have added the aftermarket transfer cases to the transfer case for the SJ series.  You can scroll through the different aftermarket cases and see what will fit you best.
