where is that leak coming from? Drops on the driveway...

Looked under my 1987 samurai and saw what appears to be a leak originating from where the driveshaft comes out the back of the transmission and connects to thetransfer case.  Its actually pretty wet in the tunnel - like whatever is coming out is being thrown.

Since i don't know my elbow from my azzhole when it come to serious wrenching, can someone tell me what this might be?  Is there a seal around the shaft that is going?  And since I may not be able to get the leak fixed before this weekend, can you add fluid to the tranny (if it is the tranny)?  I didn't see any obvious fill points.  Thanks for the guidence.

There is a hole in the side of the tranny, has a 3/8" square in it, use a ratchet
to remove it and stick your finger inside and down to check the oil level, if
there isn't any on your finger, add until oil flows out of the hole and replace
the plug. If you run the trans too low on oil you risk burning up the bearings,
gears and syncros so check it before you go wheeling of even driving around

thanks for the info. Any idea why there is fluid leaking out the back near the shaft?  Is that normal?  lastly, what type of tranny fluid am I putting in?  Thanks again.

Well, the rear trans seal or the input of the T-case
is bad, so it's one of those.

You would be putting in gear oil that is OK to use with yellow
metal so it's safe for the synchros
