Wheel Weight Questions. 1998 chevy Tracker.
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:13:41 PM »
I have a 1998 Chevy Tracker.  It came with some steel wheels which were bent and shook so I bought OEM 1995 Geo Tracker Aluminum wheels which are much better and don't shake.

My question is the weight on these suckers.  How much do the OEM steel wheels weigh and how much do the OEM Aluminum wheels weight?

These are the wheels I have now....

These are the wheels I traded up from.

Thank you.

Got a bathroom scale? weigh each. Some aluminum rims, especially factory rims are just as heavy as steel rims of the same size, due to the fact there so thick and " decorative." If undamaged they probably run truer ( the aluminum rims) than steel as they are cast and lightly machined as opposed to stamped.

I swapped my alloys for steels, the steels were less than half the weight. You can probably make a rough estimate of the difference, aluminium is 1/3 the weight of steel so if the alloy wheel is 5 times thicker it will be a good deal heavier.

I have weighed some 15x7 steel wheels and some 15x7 aluminum wheels......there was a 10 pound difference between each wheel.  Both were aftermarket wheels.

I weighed my aluminum rims when I got them, and couldn't believe how light they were. Dropped a bunch of unsprung weight and rolling mass. Noticeable difference.
