TJ Fender Flare Install...
« on: December 30, 2009, 08:34:37 AM »
All right guys...

So I promised pictures of my TJ flare install.  I guess it is going to be more of a how to but that will kill two birds with one stone.  Anywho, here we go.

So I had previously removed the stock flare and there mounts.  I had also painted the area that was previously hidden by the flare.  Here is what I started with.

As you can see, not quite legal here in Washington.

I used a set of four rear Jeep TJ flares.  I was given a set of flares from my younger brother who get them in a parts trade.  It took me about six months of watching craigslist to find the second set for $75.  Now I have a set of four front flares that I do not know what to do with.smokin

To start with, the stock mounting flange and 'pins' need to be trimmed off.

In this picture the locating 'pin' have been removed,

Here is the front pass-side flare mocked up.  At this point the flare is unmodified except for the previously trimmed flange and pins.

As you can just see above the flare, the black paint is still visible.  Sooo...  I had to do something make it look 'right'. I masked it off and painted the outline of the new flares to match.

I mounted the flares with 3M molding tape.

Here is what the finished product looks like.

Sorry that I do not a picture of the rig outside of the garage.  Been really busy trying to get the rig ready for a shakedown run.  I still think that I'm going to secure the flares with some large fender washing and some sheet metal screw just to be sure that they are secure.  I still need to trim the flares just a bit to make the flow into the body a bit better.

I like the look of them.  I think that when I repaint the rig I'm going to paint from the fender tops down gloss black as I have really liked the way it looks.  I'll probably repaint the top the stock blue.

Anyways, hope someone can use this info to help them get there flares mounted up.

Yes sir!  The flares are stock sizes TJ flares.  I prefer the look of the TJ flares over the YJ flares.  And I'm not a fan of the Bushwacker Pocket style flares as they are just too bulky looking to me on a samurai.

The tires are Bias-ply Buckshot Mudders.  The size is about 32" x 9".  This things are rated in an odd size...  The side wall calls them a Q76 sized tire. ???

do you think the tape will hold to some wacks or is that on to let them come off rather than breaking off?

We had a guy install some nice bushwackers and he dropped one in a water hole. We were trying to fish it out when he came flying around and dove the zuke into the hole....broke the flare all to hell.

Sorry for the delay on replying.

The flares are about an inch thicker than the stock sami flares.

The 3M tape is very strong.  On the first run I took them on I really beat on them.  I had the rig leaned over about 45* into a dirt/gravel bank and rode down the hill for 10 feet.  Other than a bit of scratching they held up just fine.

I am assuming you used four rear flares right?
Looks awesome.  I have some rubber flexy flares for my Tracker but I love the squared look of these...only problem is that gas door in the back I have to worry about.
