Hey everyone,  Looked around the forum here, but cant find a couple things..

To squeeze some power out of the Tracker, i'm doing an air through build, from the air intake to the exhaust tip, its all being replaced.

My plan is to use a K&N HiPerformance filter, modify the stock airbox to get a little more air, and bring the air pipe to go up through the hood.    I'll keep the stock manifold, from what i gather its not a huge inhibiter.    Then go 2" pipe straight out to either a glass pack or a turbo muffler, and down turn right before the drivers side wheel.   

What do you guys think about this?  should I think about running a highflow cat, or just go cat-less.. theres no smog control here.

I've got the Calmini headers, 2" pipes, hi-flow cat, some kind of hi-flow muffler, and it seems to help.  Shoot, the air is thin enough where I live, that nothing performs really well (Elevation 9,000 feet).  I think the 5.83 diffs helped more than any intake or exhaust mod I did.  The Safari Snorkel helps on the intake side (and it has saved the engine in deep water).

Wait,  a snorkel can HELP airflow??  i figured with such long piping, and with a 90 angle in there....that would destroy your airflow..

Absolutely it helps!  If you consider the stock plumbing in the driver's side fender, I removed almost 3 feet of skinny pipe, and replaced it with about 3 feet of larger diameter pipe - plus you get the "ram-air" effect of that intake up in the airstream.  I don't even know what some of those parts I removed were supposed to do.  What the heck is a "boom bottle"?  Yes, that's one of the bits in the fender, that you remove.

I think without porting the heads and running a more radical cam etc, etc, etc, your power increase will probably be negligible - but hey why not!  I did it! (conical air filter; 2.25" exhaust; removed cat; Turbo muffler with turn-down tip. No real noticeable increase in power, but it sounded cool!)

Well, that makes sense.   Bob, what do you have in the way of a filter?  is it just pipes?  or have you snuck a filter in there somewhere.   


I know i wont be getting much performance out of the little engine,  but at 140,000Km, (i've had it for 10k now)  i'm going through and replacing and tuning up eveyrthing short of an overhaul.  Plus i need a snorkle ;)


What do you people on the forum run for thier exhaust setups?

I run a stock filter in the stock airbox.

I have a 93 automatic. There is a pretty long hill that I used as my test - stock the car would downshift and I could barely maintain the 30mph speed limit. I removed the stock exhaust manifold and using a die grinder opened up the manifold side to match the gasket, then I really opened up the down pipe side as much as I could to match the flange gasket. I ground open the down pipe some too - if you look at it you'll see it closes down then opens back up - I attempted to remove as much restriction as possible. Made cat back exhaust from 2.25" pipe. Then I took the aluminum intake runner off and opened that some too There is a column right in the air flow - where the mounting stud comes through - I slimmed that down a lot. I removed the plastic screen from the rubber tube connecting aluminum runner to the air box. Installed K&N air filter, opened up the air ducting in the fender - I removed the dampener box and left the hole open, I cut the front open a little more because it looked restrictive.  Results are that I can climb the hill without the transmission downshifting and my speed will increase to above 40mph - where I ease off the throttle. My fuel mileage gained a little too.
But it was a lot of work for a little improvement. Still it was a power gain.

Okay,  after a little discussion, i've sketched out a rough plan...

2.25" down from stock manifold, straight down to either a short glass pack and a highflow muffler,   or   ,  to a 34" glasspack.

Then have the pipe turn and come out the side, just before the rear axle.


Hopefully i can still maintain a quiet exhaust tone.

My setup, cost me around $250 or something, I'll be using the stock manifold for now as it dumps to 2" anyhow but I'm going turbo in the next few months.

SS tubing, Magnaflow muffler, HF cat, and 8" SS flex pipe. Welds are just regular MIG tho :rolleyes:

Question. I have the 8 valve, so I have two pipes running down from the minifold to the cat. after the cat it is one pipe. should I leave it stock until the cat or make it one pipe all the way from the manifold to the tip? what exactly is the difference between a muffler and a glass pack?
