Heat problems with Samurai
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:24:59 AM »
The temperature is hot, the air just doesn't seem to come out where it says it should.  On both the Defrost/Floor and the Defrost setting, it still mostly comes out on the floor with only a very small amount coming out on the windshield.  It's hovering around 0 degrees here at night, so I need defrost.  Is there linkage that needs to be adjusted?

Also, the fan speed is strange..  Off is Off, but any of the other settings is a low speed.  The only way I can get the fan to speed up is to put the slider BETWEEN the positions.  I'm assuming this might be a medium setting..  Do I need a new resistor?

Your description sounds to me like your heater core is clogged with leaves/debris & I'd suspect the switch over the resistor on yours since it works on lower position. You may be able to get the switch open & clean the contacts & realign the lever. Not sure on a Sammy, but on my Tracker & Metro, the switch is sorta sandwiched between 2 pieces of plastic & it seems very sensitive to having the lever pulled outward... Like it's easy to yank the lever itself out of place. Use a pair of bent needlenose pliers to hold the lever while you remove the knob to avoid this. Might be you'll just need to replace the switch. On my Metro, once I got in there I could see the plastic piece that the lever pivots on was broken & all the internal parts were basically scattered. I ended up using a switch out of a Dodge Raider (Mitsu made) & wouldn't you know but the connector was the same... so I ummm 're-engineered' the plastic piece, drilled holes & ran screws through the Metros faceplate to mount the Mitsu switch, & tadaaaa, worked like a charm. The Metro was pretty tanked anyhow so I didn't want to put money into it.
Check on acksfaq.  http://www.acksfaq.com/ Do a search for 'Heater'... he has links showing a way to clean out the heater core as well as fan/resistor problems. Thanks ack!!

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the heater core is clogged, or at least there's a leaf interfering with the fan.  It clicks all the time; apparently it's very common with the Sammys.  I'll check out acksfaq more thoroughly when I get the time.  Thanks.

P.S.  Does anybody know what's up with Zuwharrie?  It's been down all of today.

My Geo is doing about the same thing except the fan only works on high and you have to jiggle it to make that work.

Zuwharrie is back up now.  ;D

I just picked the Sammy up a week ago.. what a great time to buy a topless vehicle with a weak heater in North Dakota!  Maybe that's why I got a good price on it lol.
