Airbag Disable?
« on: November 23, 2009, 09:08:17 PM »
Hey guys.   I just realized something.. we were wheeling pretty hard on saturday,  and threw the tracker around pretty harshly.

I just realized that if the airbag went off, it may cause some harm, seeing as we are not always in a "driving position".

is this something 4x4'er's disable while wheeling?   or am i just worrying.

Cheers.

Trackerprts had his airbags go off at powerfest a year ago.  His nickname is now "airbag".  He now pulls the air bag fuse before wheeling.  There is a picture I believe in the powerfest 08 right up.  So no you aren't just worrying it happens.

Thanks.   So its just a fuse to disable then?

From what i've gathered,  pulling the fuse will not disable airbags..it also has a back up line.

Has anyone done this before?  i want to put in a switch or quick dissconnect, so that i can still be safe on the roads.

Interesting.  The only thing I have ever heard of doing is pulling the fuse, but sounds like that may not be enough.  This is what you don't want to have happen.

grab a batt and hit the bumper until it blows...then you won't have to worry about getting it in the face.....be very carefull if you are going to try to cancel it. You might actually activate it.

Years back I was sitting waiting to deliver some freight and a guy was sitting in his car reading the news paper.....this little car was backing into the spot in front of the car with the guy....she just hit the car a little and pow....air bag goes off. The guy started to scream and I knew he was hurt. First on scene with the cell phone calling 911 I found the guy with a bloody nose and two broken arms...and not lightly broken. Ambulance was there is about 10 minutes and they brought him to the hospital....looked at the car and there were no marks on it.

This one was funny....don't piss off an old lady.

Dont get angry at this old lady!!!

The fuse should deactivate the air bags there are safeguards if power is cut in an accident . they will go off.
I now pull the fuse when off road. It cost $350 for new air bags and the control module. When you pull the fuse the air bag light will come on and the horn will not work.

So just to confirm then...pulling the fuse WILL deactivate the airbags??      i dont have to disconnect the connector under the steering column?

This is crazy how hard they make it to just turn them off..  it could really cause some damage while offroading.

The service book has you remove the fuse so you don't set them off when working around them. So this will disable them.

When you pull the fuse the air bag light will come on and the horn will not work.

...and the horn will not work???

Well THAT'S intuitive.   :o

I have a train horn hooked up seperatly, so thats not a huge issue.

Well, i'll pull the fuse..hopefully this disables it while off road.   Kind of scary not knowing if we're safe in the front or not.  middle of nowhere get your arms broken.

Apparently sometimes airbags go off if you static shock your steering wheel. same if you use a multi-meter on the airbag power lines.

Thats why i love my old beetle...ha, nothing more then the BARE minimum there!

they also have a capasitor in them so. you need to give them like  up to half an hour to loose there charge.. another safe gaurd built into them in case of power loss.. but ya the fuse will disable them along with the horn not working. and airbag light on..
