My Sammy acts like it is in neutral
« on: November 22, 2009, 07:06:11 AM »
HELP! the other day my I stopped my Sammy at a stop sign and, when I went to take off, it wouldn't go. No noises, everything feels normal. It just acts like it it is in neutral. I tried the Hi-Lo shifter but it doesn't seem to matter. Any clue?

Hey Ted,      I had a 98 Windstar that did this.  I would drive, come up to  a stop,  go to accelerate again, and it would just rev.

It was an internal trans problem.   Neutral sensor switch.   We never found out if it was on the computer end, or the sensor end cause the head gasket blew out first.

If you put it in park, shut it off, and turn it back on,  does it go into gear?

All I can think of is T-case shifter sheet (goes under the shift lever)
which is know to cause trouble shifting the t-case (lever gets stuck)
or your clutch totally died on the spot, but I would think you would
know something was up before that happened at a stop sign

Something similar happened to me recently, I was leaving work I took off out of the parking lot and when I went to go into 5th I got nothing it just sat there and revved i tried every gear and got nothing, It didn't make any kind of grinding or noises of that sort.
I wound up having it towed home. Well, dumfounded by this problem i wound up pulling the tranny cuz everything else i checked was fine (linkages, new shifter sheets, etc.). come to find out the friction ring on the clutch had completely broken off from the (whats the word for it?) part that goes on the input shaft of the tranny.

I replaced the clutch and it runs fine now

I have had others tell me that also. In my young "racing days" I lost a lot of clutches but, never without a lot of racket. Thank's for the confirmation.

I think the word you're looking for is FORK... lol

But if the friction ring broke off, I think you would hear it. It's not easy to break. Would take some binding too....
