So what is the final verdict on rear shocks?
« on: October 19, 2009, 07:55:46 AM »
On this forum, I've seen many kind of rear replacement shocks listed for our trucks.  I've heard everything from Crown Vic, 4 Runner, Cavalier, and Mustang shocks.  I thought maybe in this thread we could figure out what is the best shock to go with after lifting our trucks.  I know we need shocks in the rear that are 2 inches longer.  If a general concensus is reached on the best shock, perhaps we could list a part number?

-Thanks

What about the Rocky Road Hydro Shocks....or, are we looking for something on a tighter budget.  They run $49/each, or $79/pair with the purchase of a RRO lift kit.  I know my old Doetsch Tech shocks that came with my first RRO lift were pretty comfy.  I wonder if those can still be purchased somewhere.  Those were great!  My CALMINIs are horrible....rides like a WWII tank.

i second the doetsch, my calmini strut just went out so i got Emu in the front and doetsch in the rear. I llove them they come with bump stops on them and compared to calmini are more heavy duty and better all around.  I got mine from trailtough i think like 59 a peice???

Those are two aftermarket shocks I didn't know about.  Thanks for the info.

i've also seen it posted here a couple times that guys are running yota 4runner rears.  further to that i know of 3 people running mid 80's yota supra rears...  i personally have no experience with these items other than knowing the 4runners require a new bushing and sleeve be found and are mucy beefier looking

i use doetsh tech 3000's 3180. on my 2 dr, 2 inch lift they ride good, a little stiff but I'm hoping the heavier swing away bumper will solve that

I REALLY like my Rancho 5158 shocks. They installed perfectly, I just *borrowed* the sleeves from the OEM shocks.

RS5158's are 13.060 compressed, 20.920 extended, for 7.860 of travel. I think stock is about ~11.5 to ~18.5 so they're good for the 2" lift. I love how they stiffened up the rear end.

i recently purchased Jeff's lift kit direct from him, and decided on going with DOETSCH TECH 3000 Series shocks.  In my research, I found that LOW RANGE OFF-ROAD sells Jeff's kit (for more money) with or with-out shocks included.  When I called them, they informed me that with his kit, they package the DOETSCH TECH 3000 part # DT3-180, so I ordered 2 and paid $39 each plus shipping.  The total to me came to $94.00.  Hope this helps.
