Rear Towing hoops?
« on: October 02, 2009, 04:31:36 PM »
I'm curious, how strong are they?

If, say, I was to rope up a small tree/large bush to one of them, would I be able to uproot it? Or am I more likely to uproot the hoop? hehe.

Unfortunately the Dealership didn't supply me with one. Is there a link to it online anywhere?

Have at it dude, I have been yanked out HARD many a time with the rusty old hooks on my Sidekick and the fresh new ones on my Vitara, and only the one on the Sideflip broke off, but that's cause it was totally rusted around where it was welded on, and I had already bent it back once from getting it caught on the ground backing up through a ditch.

This has a been a big area of discussion for me.  A local club won't allow a truck without bolted on tow hooks for recovery.  They don't like the loops we have.  But as long as they aren't badly rusted I don't see an issue with them.  They are 1/2 inch steel and are securely welded to the frame by the factory.  I used the ones on my old Tracker many times with no incident.  Recently I was planning to wheel with a guy I met on a forum.  At first he was concerned that the Tracker might not have recovery points and didn't want to wheel with me if it didn't.  When he saw pics I posted of the loops he was totally fine with them.  I said that the other club had issues with them since they weren't hardened steel.  His response was that with as little as a Trackick weighs they would be fine.

The hoop is not an option, it's welded to the right rear frame rail.
