Quick Loc Locker install question
« on: September 14, 2009, 04:20:28 PM »
I am installing a locker in the front differential of a 88 samurai and the kit is for front or rear diffs. The kit comes witht two spacers and i can't figure out if i need them in the front or if they are for the rear differential. I did a search for front locker install but cant find any instructions on a front locker install  only rear. If any one has any info on the quick lok install or any other front locker install for a samurai it would be greatly appreciated.

The front and rear differentials (third members) on an '88 Samurai are identical down to the sidegear spline count.

The instructions for the rear dif will work for the front dif.

The rear side gear is 26 spline and the front side gear spline is 22 and the front and rear third members look completely different. The front diff only has one cross pin and only two spider gears. As far as i know it is the original third member

I think the front that you have is newer than 88 or from a tracker front, you need two small washers on the out side of the side gears and two thick ones that go in the middle by the block, put the block in with the least amount of play down, if pin does not go in you need to grind the washer down till it fits easy. I would flip it and grind down the other washer to fit also.

This front axle has no block in it. It has the side gears with 22 splines and only one cross pin with two spider gears. It came out of a solid axle housing but somebody before me could have swapped out third member from a tracker.

Ya you are probably right, it's been a few years messing with samurai diffs been messing with Toyota stuff, I was reading from a couple of powertrax (lock right) install manuals that I have from the old days, (four years ago lol) I think that they are probably generic, if i did not have to get ready for winter I would go out to the shop and open one up and look at it for ya, I tried to scan then for you but they were to large to post at 600 dpi were you could read them, I would give trail tough a call.
