nasty electrical bugs
« on: September 09, 2009, 01:03:17 PM »
Ok, so my horn didn't work, i found out that the fuse was blown so naturally i replaced it and it worked..... for about ten minutes. then the fuse blew again. Then i noticed something interesting, The bright light indicator light comes on every time i push the horn. And then something even more interesting....when i switch the A/C fan speed to the third speed the bright light indicator comes on too. when i first bought this thing i found out that a rat had made the dash its home and chewed some wires so i took it off and spliced them all together i have checked those for shorts and what not and it is all fine but i don't know where else to go from here some help would be appreciated

Looking at your handle I'm assuming it's a 87 Samurai.  Let me know if I'm wrong.

If you look at the horn you should have two wires.  One is 12v (yellow on my SJ-410), the other will ground out if you press your horn.  Disconnect the 12v line and replace your fuse.  See if it burns out.  If it does you have a short in your wiring.  If it does not then the problem is most likely in the grounding from the steering wheel.

Unplug the ground wire from the horn (blue on my SJ-410) and jump from your horn to ground and see if your horn works proper and if you blow the fuse.   Might be a bad horn as well.

The only reason I know about it is I just installed an Air Horn so I was reading up on the electrical diagrams.  :D

I have a different problem with my horn. When the wires are connected to the horn it blows constantly.
I also have a dead short in my bright light circuit. Low beams work fine. Any ideas?

If you had a "dead short" in your bright light circuit (high beam?) they would be on any time the light switch was on making it quite difficult to tell if the low beams were working.

As for the horn - that does sound like a "dead short".

There are two tricks to electrical problems - the first is diagnosing the problem, which requires understanding the circuit, and the second is pinpointing it, which requires knowing where the wires run.

You haven't given me enough details on the bright light problem for me to assist - but that is a "ground switched" circuit so a dead short (to ground) will result in the high beam coming on any time the light switch is on.

The horn is also ground switched so having it blowing constantly says there is a dead short (to ground) on the switch side of the circuit, so somewhere between the horn and the relay (if there is one) or between the relay and the button - or between the horn and the button (if there is no relay) you have a bare spot making contact with the chassis - likely places are where the wire passes through the firewall or any place it can be pinched (possibly in the steering column area).

Hi fordem. Thank you for your reply. I have a little more information. When I turn on the bright lights, the fuse blows. Since I wrote my original post, the low beams have started to be on sometimes and off sometimes and wiggling the turn signal lever that the headlight switch is on indicates that there is a loose connection in the assembly. In other words, I turn on the headlight switch and the lights don't come on. I turn the switch off and wiggle the turn signal lever and then -- sometimes -- the headlights will come on. There is undoubtedly a bad connection in the switch. I presume you know that on a Samurai the light, turn signal, flasher and wiper switches are all built into one assembly on the steering column.
I suspect I need to replace this whole assembly. I pulled the steering wheel today and tried to pull out the assembly but couldn't get it out because of the plastic steering column cover. The emergency flasher button goes through this plastic. Do you -- or does anyone -- have any tips for getting the assembly out from under this cover?

Let's start with - when you turn on the bright lights WHICH fuse blows - each headlight has it's own fuse.

For your horn issue, it might be an issue with push button setup in the steering wheel.  When you pull the front cover off the steering wheel does the horn still go off?  What about if you disconnect the ground wire?  If you disconnect that ground wire inside the steering wheel and the horn is still on then there is a short somewhere between the horn and the steering wheel.  You need to trace it down and replace that section of wire.
